Hi all,
I am running a Shuttle SB75G2 (2.4GHz HT, 1GB PC4000, 80GB SATA Barracuda) that was tolerably quiet until I upgraded my fanless Radeon 9200SE to a 9800Pro. The stock fan was loud, so I replaced it with a larger, slower fan. That helped a bit, but it's still way too loud for me.
What are my options for making this thing quieter? Here's some important info:
* I am not planning to O/C the 9800 (or any other part).
* I don't work the 3D that hard. Bit of Doom3, but mainly the card is used to 2D graphics (this is mainly my music computer, so Reason, Ableton Live, etc.).
I have looked into my options, and found:
1) Passive Zalman heatpipe rig - would be perfect, but I seriously doubt it will physically fit in the Shuttle case. The AGP slot is hard up against the side of the case. I don't have any PCI cards, so there's space on that side.
2) Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer - also look good, but again I wonder if this would physically fit.
3) Manual switch - I could just manually switch the fan between off/half and full speed. I'm thinking a discreet switch through the 3.5" front panel (I don't have a floppy drive).
4) Automatic switch - what would be really good would be to have a thermostat that switched on the 9800 fan only when needed. But the 9800Pro doesn't have a temperature sensor, and the SB75G2 MB only lets you control one fan through the BIOS (I need that for the "ICE" fan). BTW the 9800 fan is plugged into the "FAN2" connector. The northbridge fan is plugged into "FAN3".
Anyone got recommendations? One other specific question I have is this: can I run the computer with the 9800 fan _off_ for any length of time? That is, if I'm not working the 9800 (just 2D graphics)? Or is that insanity?
Any help/links appreciated!
