The wife and I just caught the late showing of Signs( you know the Mel Gibson, Alien flick)
We heard alot of good things, like it is the scariest movie in a long time. Well IOHO we both
thought it was terrible, caught ourselves fallin asleep and did not "jump" once during the
movie. If you liked it, tell me why.

That was a terrible movie... all hype and no substance, and all the characters had an IQ of 70 (at most)... and the plot holes... don't get me started!

Shyamaln is a terribly overrated director.

i really didn't pay attention to any hype, so i just saw the movie out of the blue, but i thought it was excellent, but thats probably because im a film dork... i just loved the cinematography and story. it was just so eerily slow, i loved it.

I dont think it was supposed to be fully about the aliens. It was about a man who lost his faith, and what he had to realize about life and himself in order to get it back. I liked it for more reasons than that though. Too many people are dazzeled by pretty lights these days and no longer see the message.

whoever told you that signs was a scary movie doesn't watch many scary movies.

i watched it the second day it was out so i wasn't caught up with the hype and reviews. like what yobarman said, i'm a film dork too, so i thought the movie was pretty decent. the ending was lame, but i would say signs was better than most of the other summer movies i watched.

Exactly. Buffs of old film recognize it as a modern Hitchcock homage. The story is about how an apocalyptic situation affects a family; the aliens are just an incidental plot device (the "MacGuffin").

I can see why it's probably not well-received by the general public, but this is easily one of the most beautifully-crafted films I've seen in the past year. Lots of striking framing shots, great visual storytelling, deliberate limiting of what's onscreen and great audio design to create tension.

I think anyone who watched it could get what the story was about since it was plastered in front of you through melodramatic corny storywriting which was painfully bad at times. Add all the ridiculous holes in the story and you get something way below average.

That pretty much sums it up for me too.

Although I enjoyed the movie, my thoughts on the aliens themselves have been posted on this forum before. For your edification I will recap:

"Is it just me or did the aliens absolutely suck? I mean, they show up, and hover around for a while. They mess with farmers in the night. They break windows and bang on doors, but don't really do anything other than make a lot of racket. A hick bludgeoned the one to death with a baseball bat. And when you get right down to it they couldn't even off the asthmatic kid. What's up with that? I mean, locked in the pantry? Come on. They fly in their space ships 90 million light years to get locked in a pantry? Are they walking around with a big perpetual "L" on their foreheads or what? And in the end they get wet and pull a Wicked Witch of the West. What were they thinking, coming to a planet that's 75% water. That's like us going to a planet that's made of cyanide, and picking a fight with the locals. Stupid alien imbreds."

I believe I also likened their botched attempt at glogal takeover to a grudge match between a slug and Mr. Salty.
