Damn you all! If you are going to put spoilers in the damned post, at least pad the top of post with "SPOILERS INSIDE!"
I was just reading this thread and someone revealed a big part of plot "not being about aliens"
BASTARDS! :disgust::|
I agree that the use of symbolism, etc is sorely lacking in most films today, but Shyamalan has a tendency to kind of POUND his ideas home. I'd prefer a more subtle approach that requires a bit more thought. As for the people who think it's an alien flick after watching it, I really question whether they paid attention to the movie at all...Originally posted by: yobarman

Good movie, even though Shyamalan has a tendency of overusing symbolism and allegory.
that what makes the film great. most films these days are just a story, no symbolism or meaning.
I loved this movie cause it was so tense and erie.
Definately movie of the year.
Signs - *spoiler* Worst movie of the year
You'd think that with the title "Signs" that people would know that the movie would contain a lot of symbolism, wouldn't ya?Originally posted by: spidey07
WOW, didn't realize that many people didn't like it.
I honestly haven't seen a better movie in years. But then again I'm a movie fanatic.

aliens looked weak. The wife's accident scene was weak too. Most of her vital parts were above the impact. she could have lived just probably never walk again. Water thing was inanely stupid

Very good movie. I don't know about "movie of the year" but it was a very good movie. Excellent writing and direction.
The comments of the people who don't get it (both in this thread and others) are quite amusing.
The movie was about faith, not necessarily in God but in humanity and hope. The aliens were symbolic only, they represented the external forces that work against us to destroy our faith. The water was symbolic only, it (appropriately) represented the power of life and how easy it is for that power to defeat the enemies of faith. His wife's death represented the crises in life that weaken our faith, when in fact those crises should make us stronger because everything happens for a reason.
I hope this clears it up for a few people.
edit: sorry for the spoilers 😱

Excellent summation! 🙂
My sentiments exactly. 🙂Originally posted by: exp
I'd give it a B-. 🙂 Shymalan is a technically gifted writer/director and the movie did have a great atmosphere to it, supported by good acting. But the ending is ridiculous and Shymalan's "Here, Let Me Ram This Symbolism Down Your Throat" attitude really bugs me.

I'm one of the people that hated it. Didn't seem scary at all with aliens running around would can't even break down a wooden door...

Maybe I got something totally different from the movie...
There are signs all around us. Put them into context and their meaning becomes clear. To me the entire movie was about signs.
