Damn you all! If you are going to put spoilers in the damned post, at least pad the top of post with "SPOILERS INSIDE!"

I was just reading this thread and someone revealed a big part of plot "not being about aliens"

BASTARDS! :disgust::|

"not being about aliens" isn't really a spoiler, more like an excuse or justification.

Good movie, even though Shyamalan has a tendency of overusing symbolism and allegory.

that what makes the film great. most films these days are just a story, no symbolism or meaning.

I loved this movie cause it was so tense and erie.

Definately movie of the year.
I agree that the use of symbolism, etc is sorely lacking in most films today, but Shyamalan has a tendency to kind of POUND his ideas home. I'd prefer a more subtle approach that requires a bit more thought. As for the people who think it's an alien flick after watching it, I really question whether they paid attention to the movie at all...

WOW, didn't realize that many people didn't like it.

I honestly haven't seen a better movie in years. But then again I'm a movie fanatic.

You'd think that with the title "Signs" that people would know that the movie would contain a lot of symbolism, wouldn't ya?

aliens looked weak. The wife's accident scene was weak too. Most of her vital parts were above the impact. she could have lived just probably never walk again. Water thing was inanely stupid

Either you are

1. Alien artist
2. Accident Re-enactor
3. Doctor
4. Disabled specialist
5. Writer

Or all of the above? 🙂
I actually liked the movie. Very simple plot, a man losing his faith and a twist, a distraction of alien invasion to get the kiddies in the theater.

Very good movie. I don't know about "movie of the year" but it was a very good movie. Excellent writing and direction.
The comments of the people who don't get it (both in this thread and others) are quite amusing.
The movie was about faith, not necessarily in God but in humanity and hope. The aliens were symbolic only, they represented the external forces that work against us to destroy our faith. The water was symbolic only, it (appropriately) represented the power of life and how easy it is for that power to defeat the enemies of faith. His wife's death represented the crises in life that weaken our faith, when in fact those crises should make us stronger because everything happens for a reason.
I hope this clears it up for a few people.

edit: sorry for the spoilers 😱

Excellent summation! 🙂

Ummnnn...thanks for explaining the 3rd grade symbolism. I think most people who watched it "go it". I think the reason most people didn't like it was that while they were beating you over the head with the obvious cheesy faith symbolism it was placed in such a ridiculous half-assed framework which annoys the hell out many people.

I'd give it a B-. 🙂 Shymalan is a technically gifted writer/director and the movie did have a great atmosphere to it, supported by good acting. But the ending is ridiculous and Shymalan's "Here, Let Me Ram This Symbolism Down Your Throat" attitude really bugs me.

My sentiments exactly. 🙂

I'm one of the people that hated it. Didn't seem scary at all with aliens running around would can't even break down a wooden door...
**spoiler**
yes i thought it was retarded that some strong technologically advanced aliens would crumble to water and leave

1 day after they began their invasion

that they had no artillery and planned a hand to hand invasion of the earth

i liked it up to the point where the ships were hovering above the earth

everything after that part destroyed my opinion of the movie

people keep saying it's not about aliens. Bwuhahahaha...em ok

I suppose the movie was built around the meaningful life of Gibson losing and finding faith, his lost wife, her prophecy of hitting it out of the park, fate, and a few other mumble jumble. Emmmmm....yeah. The movie had nothing to do with aliens. those 2 hours of actors jumping around in cheap monkey suits pretending to be aliens did not in any way cheapen the main plot of Gibson's life coming full circle.

Maybe I got something totally different from the movie...

There are signs all around us. Put them into context and their meaning becomes clear. To me the entire movie was about signs.

I enjoyed this film up until the climax... which kind of ruined it for me. I guess his previous films also had huge "twists", I just didn't like the baseball bat + water = dead alien.

The symbolism has litle or nothing to do with most people's dislike of the movie. What you and others don't realize is that we (people who don't like it) do infact "get it". The symbolism was so obvious even Forrest Gump would have gotten it.

As flavio said, the worst thing about the movie is that it delivers its message is a horrible way, its hard to imagine anyone overlooking that and liking the movie.

You like the movie because you like its message and are willing to overlook its plot, which has more holes than the surface of the moon.

I thought you had info that this movie won some award for best picture. Enjoyable movie, i don't think it's the best though.

And they had that huge invasion fleet taking out only a smalll humber of people. We killed them with water? Damn what about a 7mm rem mag to the head. Dumb a*s aliens.
