Signs of Racism

I am dismayed by the racism in society, and by how many bigots are blind to their own nature. Having been raised by a father who was only mildly bigoted aside, and a mother and a stepmother who isn't a all, I it was easy for me to see the absurdity of such stereotyping and avoid embracing anything of the sort. In that regard, I found this commentary excellent:

[/quote]I was born in Bombay, India in 1962 but my family moved to Northern Ireland when I was four years old. I was brought up in N. Ireland (part of the United Kingdom). This short piece on the signs of racism reflects a lifetime experiencing the kind of "hidden" or "subtle" racism which the British have pioneered (in the same way as they pioneered the transatlantic slave trade carried out by European nations in the 17th and 18th centuries and imperialism in the late 19th century to the end of the second world war). As societies become ever more multi-racial and members of minority groups reach positions of power and influence, subtle racism will be the predominant form in all countries in the 21st century. It is a hugely more pernicious and dangerous form than the more explicit varieties because of a fundamental truth - the spirit of a person can only be diminished by loss, bereavement or defeat, in the long run the human spirit will always rise up and triumph in the face of overt oppression because no one can respect his oppressor.
Although people whose ancestors came from different geographic regions look different, no scientific or biologic evidence exists to support even the idea of race. Not surprisingly, it is rare, today, for a person to admit to being a racist. Despite the prevalence of racism (the belief that members of a particular "race" or ethnic group share common qualities), the word "racist" has acquired a very negative connotation and is even somewhat pejorative. It is even rare for people to openly espouse racist philosophy. Someone can be a racist regardless of their religion, intelligence, cultural level, social status, benevolence towards members of their own race or social motivation. Racists come from all races (sometimes the race which they feel they belong to may not be obvious). Racism is thus only implicit in behavior. What are the signs?

I hope everyone here will read though the list and think about how to better identify bigotry avoid falling into such ignorance.

Do you see people engaging in the things listed there regularly? If not, either you aren't paying attention or you are just as bigoted as them.

It isn't my list, but I think it could provoke some introspection in those who are unwittingly bigoted, and if it does so for even just one person it was worth taking the time to post.

What I see that is interesting is just about everybody incuding you Snowman is a racists!
The list leaves nobody out and I includes all of us who are on the Israeli or Palestinian side of things.
Just because you find the commentary excellent is no basis for assuming that he is correct!!
In fact your post comes accross as being a veiled attempt to troll.....

Peace!!

Do you really think, with all that's out there and all the things that makes someone a racist, that they will read your list and suddenly not be racists?

I find this a lot in education (and I have no idea if you're in the field) where scholar types believe they can honestly make great changes in people's attitudes by having them read an essay or something to that effect. Bless their little souls, but 99% of the time it just doesn't work that way.

The only one of these that could even remotely apply to me is:

Invisibility. An indifference to the plight of members of society who are of other races when they suffer injustices. It is typical of the racist to claim that he is under no obligation to help or that the situation in question is somehow an "inevitable" by-product of some greater good. When the great majority of members of the disadvantaged group are not of his race a pattern emerges.

You wouldn't find any pattern related to race in examining me, but I would claim quite often that I am under no obligation to help or that the situation is somehow an "inevitable" by-product, usually of people's own stupidity or laziness (no matter what their skin color.) Doesn't mean I shouldn't help, but does mean that there is no obligation.

As far as I'm concerned Racism is to treat someone differently based on race, as opposed to their character and actions. It is NOT the mere mention of race.

WTF? People here say "racism" like it's a bad thing...

Why if it weren't for racism, what would all those Southerners do on Sunday?

How would the towns with the race tracks survive?

no, it could be also to denigrate a group based on their shared attributes... like, oh, maybe making jokes about the participants in the special olympics... it's not always 'race'ism... but the race-card crowd has to keep coming up with things to march behind...

i say we do some "death to the ...ists" tshirts and kill everybody, since diogenese will find his honest guy before you find one with no prejudice...

While your OP is OK, this is just plain stupid. This equates to the "if you don't agree with me you must be ignorant or racist" way of closed minded thinking.
Being of Irish decent I'm no fan of the English or their bigoted ways, however I do have the perspective of a persecuted minority that looks allot like its oppressors. In this I have found a truth that all should understand. There are only two types of people in the world, and that would be cool people, and the assholes.
Cool people see past the minor bullshit and endeavor to be on good relations with all. Asshole think their brand of "right" is superior to all others and will go to any lengths to impose their idea of right on others.
I find it increasingly humorous that those who preach that they are against racism are the most apt to use race as a baseline of opinion, and thus are by definition racist. Neat how that works huh?

I am dismayed at the level of nonsense that gets reported as Racism today....people used to have thicker skin, and understood sarcasm and humor better years ago...today we are all victims of the Nanny state, politically correct society we are all told we must adhere to. It's bullshit.

The people that whine about racism the most are usually those that fear their own feelings...and need to tell everyone that they are not Racist....
