Hundreds of students, teachers, politicians and community leaders stood in the snow to watch the unveiling of a blue and gold sign proclaiming a Hempstead elementary school is now named after President Barack Obama.

Hours of speeches, songs and dance preceded the moment, as part of a ceremony to rename Ludlum Elementary School.

Barack Obama Elementary School is the first school in the nation named after the country's first black president.

The Hempstead school board voted unanimously on the name change in November and the school held an inauguration event last month, but no sign marked its new name until Wednesday.

"Now that the sign is up we are now officially stars in the sky," said fifth-grader Esta Thomas. "We are leaders today."

The 460-student school's enrollment is 62 percent Hispanic and 36 percent African-American. Several students come from Africa, and many more come from El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador and Puerto Rico.

The school, built in 1928, was previously named for the late Dr. Charles Ludlum, a longtime school board president.

The name-change idea began to jell after a fifth-grade teacher asked students Jalani Johnson and Samantha Alburez, both 10, to write essays on why their school should be named for Obama.

"This beautiful new sign is the final element of this wonderful transition," Principal Jean Bligen said before the ceremony. "It will express our pride and excitement to all who see it."

Welcome to tax dollars feeding the Messiah cultists.

Complete with life size cardboard cutouts too. I wonder if the 5th graders will have to take turns kissing it on the groin region.

The level of your curiosity and the level of your class are well matched and reflect each other.

Are you serious winnar111? You didn't say a single bad word about the GWB Courthouse, but now you're bitching about this? Troll.

At this point I'm starting to wonder if Winnar is being paid to do this. All he does is post up an endless series of ultra right wing posts attacking Obama with one line of commentary, and then he runs away, occasionally to return with another 1 line post.

My theory is that people who hate themselves prefer negative attention to no attention. It at least gives them the feeling they exist. You must be a somebody if you can promote a reaction even if it's being laughed at.

George W. Bush is a former President and an ex-politician. The idea was proposed last year but died down because he was in office.

So WTF is this school going to do if Obama turns out to be a crappy president? If people start despising him. Are they going to change it back? I'm all for cities renaming buildings to honor people in history, but that type of thing normally tends to happen at some point in the future when it is an honor to recognize and remember someone. You are really setting yourself up for who the hell knows what by doing it ahead of time.

As far as Midland, well Bush's friend is trying to rename the George Mahon Federal Building to "George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush United States Courthouse and George Mahon Federal Building." The request to change it while Bush was still in office was denied (it also didn't have dad's name on it). Now that he is done, and they added his dad's name to the title, maybe it will pass....................doubt it. Either way, it is being done at the END of his presidency, not the start. Had it been done at the start, I can't begin to imagine the amount of vandalism, protests, and hell maybe even attacks that place would have invited.

Uh... Yes. That happened to my highschool. It was originally named Warren G. Harding High School. 😱

By long before the time I got there, it was renamed University High School, but to this day, there are wrought iron H's in the ironwork around the older buildings.

My theory is that people are expecting way too much from Obama.

My theory on your theory is that you are an ideologue, a person pre-committed to a set of ideas, here that neither democrats or republicans can bring change, and that any faith any may have in Obama threatens your world view causing you to throw shit.

Obama and only Obama, at this point in time, can bring change. I hope he does. I have no need for him to and no expectations. I see the potential, not the realization.

The hope-slimers are fools who don't want anything good to happen because it will make them see what real fools they were and how corrupt and sick are the things they stand for.

It isn't faith. I just have my eyes open and my head on my shoulders rather than up my butt.

Obama and only Obama, at this point in time, can bring change.

Totally disagree. Presidents can't bring change, only people can bring change. And their dependency on one man to do it for them is where they fail, every time.

I hope he does.

Hope and $10 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

No, the fools are those with their head's up their asses and fingers in their ears. It has nothing to do with want or hope, and everything to do with reality.

The whole point is that you are an ideologue and don't know what reality is. You see with an ideological lens..

I certainly do not think the point here is to blame Obama for this fascination. He's a politician and has done a good job selling himself. The "messiah" image isn't Obama's fault, it's his supporters' fault.
