now you say that it is possible to run a dx10 card in xp?? are there any issues with that, or has it been smooth sailing??

Yes, it just runs in DX9 mode. As far as the graphics card is concerned it's just the same as playing a game that doesn't use D3D 10. They're actually blazing fast in DX9 under XP.

The idea is even if you don't have Vista now, you can buy a D3D10 graphics card like the 8800GTX and get ground-breaking performance in DX9 games, under XP, and if and when you decide to upgrade to Vista (for the full pretties in Crysis, for example (which I didn't say was D3D10 exclusive but will not even be the same game in DX9, read the Video forum threads about it)) then you'll not need to upgrade your graphics card. So even if you're not taking advantage of D3D10 now you'll at least be future-proofed.

Vouch

Also, hating Vista when you just tried beta is immature.
In couple years, Vista will be polished, popular, excellent system. Every beta sucks by it's very nature! If you didn't like interface I'm sure there's a way to get rid of it.

and how much is a 8800GTX?? cheapest one I happen to find on newegg was 530 I think it was, which in my book is a bit insane. sure it might be a great card and all but I think thats just a bit much.
unless im looking in the wrong place I dont think I would be getting a 8800GTX!!

well, this is true one shouldnt hate it right off the bat but its a first impression and well as the saying goes "you only have 1 chance to make a first impression". though I do plan on giving it another look in about a year or more!!

So instead of looking for an expensive high-end DX9 card, why not go for an 8800GTS? The 320MB model is much more affordable and will still rock most current non-G80 series cards. Check out the AT benchmark and review.

well, I dont need a sli or cf setup as im not that serious of a gamer.

but what is this you mentioned, for me to use a 10dx card I will need vista??

According to all that has been written, that I've seen, Windows XP will never have DX10, it's a Vista only feature.

Sad if that's true, as I don't see Vista being a viable OS option for quite some time. DX9 for me!
U are very wrong, been running Vista since 1-21-07, not a single crash. I could never say that about XP for more than 2 weeks.
You couldn't run XP for more than two weeks without a crash? :Q

Seriously... XP crashed every two weeks? 😕
The last time I had XP crash was because of overheating (set my laptop on the cooling pad wrong and left the room, a sucking fan was right underneath the HSF's intake instead of under the middle of the thing like it's supposed to be 😱) The time before that.. I have no idea, can't even remember the last time it crashed and was XP's fault.

6) Most graphics cards manufacturers are stopping production of better DX9 graphics cards.
Huh? There is only one DX10 GPU on the market (two variants). They won't stop production of products they have no replacement for. The better DX9 cards will just go a notch down to the next lower segment with better pricing, as is the rule of the market.

The current gen DX9 GPUs are highly refined, as is game code and drivers for DX9. Being first gen DX10, G80 is immature and expensive, with equally immature support in game code and drivers.

There will be hugely better DX10 GPUs (and drivers) available when the first pure DX10 "Vista only" games are ready for market, not to mention much less expensive. That you can safely bet on.

um, but even then 300 is a bit much over my budget of 200. I know 200 might not be alot for the newer cards but it is what I have given myself. I guess for a few more weeks the hunt will continue!!

whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy must it always be such a hard thing to choose from!! lol
