**** I messed up see last post ****

So I've downloaded both the x86 and x64 versions of Vista w/SP1 and burned to DVD's.

Today I thought I'd mess around a little bit with the 32-bit version and install it on an older single core PC sitting in the closet.

The curious thing is that the 32-bit version tells me shortly into the install process that I'm attempting to load a 64-bit application onto a computer with a CPU that is not compatible. Thinking that I somehow switched the disks, I booted off the other one and I get the same message.

My download history at TechNet shows my having downloaded the two different versions. The downloads were a month apart and the DVD's were created and labeled within minutes of the download completion so I really don't feel there was a mix up there.

What have I done wrong?

Edit: The autorun.inf on both disks is identical. Why the reference to x64 on both?

[AutoRun.Amd64]
open=setup.exe
icon=setup.exe,0

[AutoRun]
open=sources\sperr32.exe x64
icon=sources\sperr32.exe,0

Am I on to something or is my ignorance showing?

Edit 2: Hmmm, here's the autorun.inf from a retail purchased OEM 32-bit version of Business.

[Autorun]
open=setup.exe
icon=setup.exe,0

Yeah, but the file sizes are considerably different. I'm confused.

3748.59 for x64
2943.18 for x86

Is that autorun.inf file in play when booting from a CD? If I altered the file would that "fix" this?

Here are the Vista SP1 ISOs I downloaded from Technet within the last month or so. Both match up with your stated filesizes.

en_windows_vista_with_service_pack_1_x86_dvd_x14-29594.iso (2943mb)
en_windows_vista_with_service_pack_1_x64_dvd_x14-29595.iso (3748mb)

I installed Vista 32-bit last weekend using the x86 ISO with no problems.

Yup, that's the same names and file sizes I have. I downloaded x64 a month ago and x86 today.

I don't know if I'm barking up the wrong tree or not, but if you could post the contents of the autorun.inf files on those disks (assuming you've burned both the ISO files to disks) it may be helpful. I keep asking if those files are relevant and haven't got an answer and maybe I'm way off base, but it appears the .inf file is in control.

Here's the autorun.inf info:

x86
[Autorun]
open=setup.exe
icon=setup.exe,0

x64
[AutoRun.Amd64]
open=setup.exe
icon=setup.exe,0

[AutoRun]
open=sources\sperr32.exe x64
icon=sources\sperr32.exe,0

The x86 inf matches the OEM, which would be expected. FYI, my downloads are just the opposite. Vista Ultimate x86 with SP1 was downloaded from TechNet on 5/14/08, and the x64 image was downloaded just last night.

It really sounds like you burned the x64 ISO twice.

No, that wasn't possible because I didn't keep the x64 file. One I burned it a month or so ago, I deleted it to conserve HD space knowing I could download it again if needed. This is partly why I'm so confused.

Thanks a million though! You confirmed what I suspected in regards to the .inf file. I'm burning that configuration right now under the assumption that it would take care of the problem.

Thanks for the help! Maybe tomorrow, I'll download both files anew just for a sanity check.

What a dummy I am. You're exactly right. I downloaded the file again, went to burn it and realized Nero went back to the last ISO I burned from - a file I forgot I had kept.

Sorry to put everyone through this. Thanks to everyone though! Buy stock in DVD+R makers. I've gone through a boatload today.

:eek:

I think most around here have done something similar at one point or another. Someone is probably lying if they claim otherwise.

The best today was when I couldn't get the computer to boot off the Vista disk. I'm messing around in the BIOS and I can't get it to work. All of a sudden I realize this old Socket 462 computer doesn't have a DVD drive in it, just a CD. :eek: Fortunately, I had an extra laying around. A couple of 'blond moments' today. :laugh:
