signed magnitude requiring seperate add/subtract hardware

I red that using signed magnitude to represent numbers requires separate hardware for add and subtract. Can anyone elaborate?

adding a positive number and a negative number using 2s complement as if they were both positive still yields the correct answer. with signed magnitude, not so.
