Signal drop in wireless network

I have a SMC7004AWBR Barricade Wireless Router hook up in my house upstairs. Downstairs, at the other end of the house (could I get further away?) I have a SMC2662W Wireless USB Adapter hooked up to a Win98 machine. When it works, it works great at 100% strength and 100% quality. Every once in a while it completely loses the signal and I have to wait a while to reestablish it. The strange thing is that on my Win98 laptop with a SMC2632 Wireless PC Card I've never noticed a signal drop.
It shouldn't be an interference problem since I don't think the microwave or cordless phone was on when the signal would be dropped. Any ideas?

I would put the Laptop near the Desktop, and see if the drop occurs in both.

If it does not drop on the Laptop then can assume the Wireless Router is ok.

Next, at the same location put the USB adaptor on the Laptop, and try.

If the connection drops, it is a faulty USB adaptor, if it does not drop then concentrated on the Desktop.

this is interesting.

i have the exact same router, and a very similar problem.

i experience that "drop off" of connection on my laptop though.

i'll just be sitting there, 10 feet from the wireless router, with 100% connectivity, and suddenly i'll lose the connection for awhile.

It's rare, but it happens enough that i notice it. i have an SMC pcmcia wireless NIC for my laptop

maybe it's a known issue with the router?
