I say make it legal, but make it 100% at your own risk. If someone opens their car door or changes lanes etc then the motorcycle is always at fault. Unless it can be proven the car did it on purpose. Ex: you should check your mirror before opening your door. But a crotch rocket doing 100+ you might just miss anyway even if you do check.

I am in California. It stands to reason that less vehicles leads to lees congestion. And it 20 years we'll be like Asia where everyone rides scooters.

but your argument is to allow lane splitting where it does not currently exist--not to mandate everyone drive bikes or scooters. You support lane splitting because you think it reduces congestion.

In CA, where the current number of motorcycles and cars exist and where there is lane splitting--do you think that there is a tolerable/reduced level of congestion? Is it less than anywhere else, per capita, where the same car/bike ratio would exist and where a new lane splitting law would change things?

I'm challenging the notion that lane splitting actually reduces congestion, as it seems that the pubic data from the NTSB seems to suggest that it doesn't. I think it's easy enough to see that a simple lane splitting law, in CA, agrees with those numbers.

Personally, I don't really mind when bikes or scooters split lanes in stopped traffic. I honestly think that is great and one of those unique benefits that they should enjoy--well, assuming they are driving some 70 mpg vehicle and not some pointless hawg. I don't like lane splitting at full speed on the expressway or in the city...which I think is illegal everywhere, right?

Nope. Won't sign it. I understand why bikers want to be able to do it...but it's dangerous...for bikers and drivers alike. (for the drivers, the "danger" is to their vehicle)

Far too many motorcyclists ignore "common sense" when splitting lanes and drive between the lines of cars MUCH faster than would be prudent.

Agree with you!

Nope not signing.

I choose to commute on a motorcycle because I can split. I hate sitting in traffic caused by inattentive operators. When I ride, I imagine that I am invisible and no one can see me. That way I don't have to rely on their skills.

This is why you should be ticketed. Ya, you are not inattentive nor lacking in skills, because you are invisible.

Where do the "facts" and statistics claimed in the petition plea come from? And exactly what legal weight does a poorly worded petition, even with 100,000 signatures have, if any?

"Lane-splitting is safe if done in traffic moving at 50 mph or less, and if motorcyclists do not exceed the speed of other vehicles by more than 15 mph"

Says who? What if it's raining? What if the wind is gusting? What if it's dark out? What if the freeway is in disrepair? What does "safe" even mean? How many people can die doing it per year for it to still be considered "safe"?
