I own 3 40Gig IBM GVEs (5400s), no problems. But, I believe all the reports of the GXPs having problems as I've seen several IBM SCSI ServerStar drives fail on two different rackmount servers in the same week.

IBM drives are usually pretty reliable except for the GXP line...I wonder if the ServerStar drives we had fail were made in the same factory or shared the same failing component?

IBM probably knows the answer, but knowing them, they're not going to public announce that they screwed up when they made a few million hard drives...

Agreed, almost bought a 60 GXP after I heard about the 75 GXP problems, now the 60's are seeing to crop up more....

Hope you can solve your IBM problem.

I read that some of the drive problems were related to the controller. Someone did a statistical review and found drive failures common with certain (non-Intel) controllers. I'll try to dig up the link. I have five 45-gig IBM 75GXPs .. the ones everybody is complaining about .. not a single failure in 18 months (knock on wood .. Intel 815e chipset).

I have 2 20gb IBM 60gxp's running at 150mhz fsb (37.5 pci) and they are in a Raid 0 array. I haven't had any problems since I set them up last year. I did read an interesting article about how the 20gb's are rumored to use a newer technology glass platter (over traditional metal platters). But I don't know if there is any truth in this at all. I was using a 400watt Future Power PSU but I decided to drop the $100 for an Enermax Whisper 431watt psu today. Very nice PSU if you ask me. All the specs are doubled over my future power. Also have a better current flowing through my 5v and 12v rails.

I have had to RMA 2 40GB 60GXP's... no OC. Only reason why I still have the replacements is that I don't have the cash to buy new ones yet.

I was a true blue IBM believer until yesterday when one of my 46 GB 75GXPs started making that scratching sound (this HD has seen very heavy use over the past 2.5 years with several O/S installs and reformats without giving me any problems, until now). It's also made in Thailand; I was under the impression that the problematic 75GXPs were made in Hungary (I also have one of these that has been chugging along fine the past 2.5 years!). I'll be RMA'ing it shortly but whatever they send me is most likely going to get tossed (unless they send me a 120GXP!!!).

I was able to get what data I needed off of it (I have backups anyway and the drive hasn't completely crapped out yet). I replaced it with a Seagate Barracuda IV, on sale at Fry's for $99.95 plus tax with a $25.00 rebate (60 Gigs for 84 bucks is a good buy IMO)...the Seagate, from what I've seen so far, is a great drive and every bit as quiet as the IBM was...
