*sigh* Vista disappoints me so much.

Running Vista x64.

1. explorer.exe is using 100% of the CPU for absolutely no good reason. It's bringing my dual core CPU to its knees. This is such a common problem for me that I often have to kill explorer via task manager at least 7 times a week. I mean, what the hell is explorer doing that it needs 100% of my CPU for hours and hours and hours? It's like it's on some damn infinite loop bug or something.

2. Sync Center is a complete piece of shit. Searches for changes on my pocket PC every few minutes like it feels like it just connected. It usually says the Pocket PC is disconnected even though My Computer sees it and I can browse it just fine. It also disconnects on random. It also refuses to allow my Pocket PC to shut down. If I turn off my PPC while it's connected to the computer, Sync Center always wakes it up after a minute to "search for changes." Of course, Microsoft forces me to use Sync Center for anything I want to do with the PPC.

3. explorer doesn't remember folder settings. I can't set "detail view" as default because it never remembers the settings. The tab details also never get remembered. I want it to show things like "date modified" "size" "file type." But it always shows stupid crap like "date picture taken" "picture rating" and "tags." When I try to change it Vista NEVER remembers these changes, even after I do the apply to all folders thing.

4.
HDD usage goes to a solid 100% for hours at a time. I've turned off indexing. I've turned off every type of scan I can think of. I've stopped every single scheduled program I can think of. Using procmon it's always something like svchost using the HDD. And it's forceful! When this is happening, I can't do anything. I can't watch movies. I can't process photos. I can't play games. Web browsing gets really slow. It's like it places USER INPUT as the very LOWEST priority and completely hijacks my computer. I thought these things were only supposed to happen while my computer is idle, and stop the moment it's not idle anymore?

EDIT - More Problems

5. When I wake the computer up from Sleep, browsers that were open when I put the computer to sleep can no longer establish a connection to the internet. So if I had AT open in Firefox when I put my computer to sleep, when it wakes up Firefox won't be able to refresh or go to any links. Same with IE. I have to close all browsers and restart them and then they connect just fine. This is horrible because I usually have about 60 tabs open and I have to wait for all 60 tabs to reload again.

6. My HDD access light is SOLID and I hear seeking all the time as I run malware scanners. Guess what Resource Monitor shows as the Disk Usage? 0 KB/sec. Worthless?

7. Windows doesn't shut down. When I go to shut down Vista it just gets stuck at the "shutting down windows" screen. For hours. Awesome.

I just know that there's more to come.

EDIT - Even more problems

8. Sound Blaster Audigy 2 snaps and cracks and gives static-y sound output when my CPU usage is high. Guess which Vista program sometimes leads to this?

9. explorer uses 100% when I open up some folders. My Computer sometimes causes this. Folders with a lot of files have a very good chance of doing this, but when I delete all the files so that there are only a couple of files in the folder, explorer still goes to 100%.

10. After coming back from Sleep, sometimes I don't have any more sound. I have to enable and disable my sound card in Device Manager in an attempt to get it working again.

11. Resource Manager sometimes HARD LOCKS the entire computer for a second at a time. There will be periods when I have it on when all of a sudden my input devices stop working and the mouse pointer stops moving for about a second, then starts moving again, then stops moving, then starts... etc. This lasts for a minute until Resource Manager stops using 50-70% of the CPU and goes back to using 0-5% CPU.

12. As always, USB connectivity with my PDA Phone is complete hit or miss. Plug in. Vista says it's not connected. My Phone says it IS connected. Unplug and replug. Still can't establish a connection. Do this three more times and on the third try it connects. WTF? I even hear the USB connect sound effect every time I plug in the USB.

13. Windows Defender scan scheduling doesn't work worth a damn. It is set to scan daily at 2AM. Guess what it does? It scans ANY TIME IT PLEASES. I just caught it starting to scan at 1:36AM, which led to a C++ Runtime Error in one of my image editing programs that was running through a batch of photos at the time, and now I have to restart a batch. EACH batch item takes about 3 hours to process by itself.

The heavy CPU usage you described is not normal Vista behavior. Maybe post a HijackThis log?

Someone has a problem and doesn't like Vista! OMG this is the first I've heard of this 🙂

Mech's right though. Somethings wrong, and it's not Vista. [At least as far as performance goes]. Most of the other problems you're reporting seem to be common complains about Vista per se.

Ah, we need system specs to help you.

I don't have the other problems, as has been said its not normal, but that folder shit happens to me as well, its a load of balls, every time i browse through control panel or my music folder it looks different to what i set it to last time. Im fed up opening control panel to be greeted with HUUUGEE icons.

Pentium D 805 (dual core 2.66GHz)
4GB DDR
SATA drives out the whazoo - 320GB primary, 500GB secondary, two 500GBs on USB
nVidia 7900GT
Asus P5ND2 SLI (non-Deluxe)
Audigy 2
Two IDE NEC DVD burners

I mean, damn. I'm not someone to complain about stupid stuff like UAC, but I have to say that the HDD usage pisses me off because it makes my computer close to unusable, and Sync Center makes my PPC close to unusable. I wish that Vista would at least TELL me what exactly is using the HDD, and what it's trying to do. And also to ONLY do it while idle. The CPU thing I figured couldn't be normal, but this is a new install for Christ sakes. I've noticed that it sometimes happens when I open up (and keep open) My Computer. The moment I close My Computer CPU is back to normal again. And then there are those times when I close all explorer windows but explorer.exe is still using 100% CPU.

If you haven't run the system through Windows Update until it's all patched, that would be a start. Windows actually could probably tell you what's using the disk, btw... open Task Manager, go to Performance, and open Resource Monitor.

Found this for ya: "explorer.exe" uses 100% of my CPU.

I'm by no means qualified to offer highly-technical Vista support, but I second mech's suggestion about running HijackThis! and also making sure Vista is fully patched.

While I'm sure there could be a number of causes for your probs, it might be interesting to try something next time your machine is 'locked-up': Disconnect your Internet connection (pull the plug). If those 100% CPU and HDD usages suddenly plummet, maybe you have spyware that was "phoning home"? With Botnets and other assorted spyware gremlins nowadays that hijack machines for use as spam/pron zombies, or to launch DNS attacks, anything's possible. Obviously Vista's UAC should keep that stuff out, but if people get tricked into letting it 'pass,' well .... Don't mean to insult your intelligence here -- just throwing an idea out there.

There is also a known problem with Vista and some RAID setups depending on how Vista is installed. You have a slew of HDs and don't say whether or not you're using RAID, but if you are, know that when you install Vista via the in-place upgrade method (rather than the "custom installation" method), Microsoft told me it's necessary to go into the BIOS before the installation and either disable RAID or set it to Auto Detect. Failing to do so can result in a corrupted installation. I learned this while struggling with a Vista upgrade on a Dell XPS 400 recently, and it might just be related to those machines, but I got the impression from Microsoft that it's a prob with RAID in general and not just a Dell-only issue. AFAIK, RAID can be enabled again after the installation is successfully completed.

Also, when doing an in-place upgrade installation of Vista, running Microsoft's Upgrade Advisor first is absolutely essential IMHO. That Dell I worked on had > a half dozen pieces of software that wreaked havoc with my attempt at an in-place upgrade. You might run the Upgrade Advisor on your machine and see if it identifies any potential conflicts (if you can do that after Vista is already installed -- I dunno). If so, that might point you in the direction of some sort of software conflict.

I also had a failed Vista installation due to not updating that same Dell's BIOS first (which, of course, Dell makes no effort whatsoever to notify their customers of  ). With the Version A05 BIOS, the installation resulted in a slew of problems. After updating to Version A07 and re-installing Vista, everything's fine. Just for the heck of it, you might update your Asus mobo's BIOS (if an update is available). Good luck.

Sounds like someone needs to install some patches!

No, really, something is seriously wrong.

She's not running RAID.

I'll also admit, your system is kinda old to run 64-bit Vista. Your mobo might need a BIOS upgrade. The 805 is also due for replacement. Buy yourself an e6750. (Your board will certainly not support the e8400/8500, but a BIOS update might fix that too.) I guarantee that alone will breathe new life into your system. Make sure to fully update the OS. Your problems should vanish. If no BIOS updates are available, the board might also need replacement.

Don't despair. Me loves Vista 64-bit.

That's a good find, even if ProcessExplorer (which I use to good effect on my XP system) won't work in Vista 64.

This seems to be a disturbing trend within Vista threads of people suggesting that others throw money at the problem when they really don't need to.
The OP's system is plenty enough to run Vista, and the cpu is just fine.

When this stuff occurs my computer is 100% up to date. Latest drivers, latest BIOS, all Vista updates except for language packs.

Here is my Hijack This Log. CPU was 50-70% running nothing but My Computer and some things in the taskbar.

Yep, there's something wrong with your computer but it ain't Vista.

BTW, the folders settings thing... that has been like that since XP. I was hoping Vista would fix that but it didn't.

What's with all the system files saying they're missing? Hijackthis not Vista compatible? I'd use that with caution. I know of a person that nuked lsass.exe and it was not fun. 😉

Everything looks fine. The few unknown programs are genuine Vista programs and another of the unknown programs is my photo editing software.

Added another thing that's wrong with Vista or Creative.

Running Vista x64.

explorer doesn't remember folder settings.

I don't have the other problems, as has been said its not normal, but that folder shit happens to me as well, its a load of balls, every time i browse through control panel or my music folder it looks different to what i set it to last time. Im fed up opening control panel to be greeted with HUUUGEE icons.

I have that same folder issue. It's a major pain in the ass and the only thing I really hate about Vista. WTF is the problem?? Hopefully SP1 will fix that. Otherwise Vista has worked great.

I'm growing tired of Vista, too. I have a Q6600, 4GB of RAM, and dual hard drives. However:

-Sleep only works 80% of the time
-Files copy, paste, and delete slower than in XP
-The new TCP/IP stack is AWFUL. LAN transfers are slow with long periods of 0% activity, followed by bursts of activity...it took 5 minutes to transfer 8MB via 54mbps WiFi to my laptop with a perfect signal.
-My HP LaserJet 1018 drivers are buggy
-Dozens of annoying bugs that I'm not going to get into...all were fixable, but should've been ironed out before the OS was released, or at least by now (the OS over a year old!)

Try the Vista SP1 release candidate REFRESH, it'll help SOME of that.
http://www.microsoft.com/downl...852c0ca&DisplayLang=en

Also update your device drivers for your chipset, video card, lan, everything, since
they can impact the sleep / ACPI reliability.

Even so...
I have a similar system, and I agree in the main with your assessments about the bugs.
To me it's like a sad little 'toy' OS that's slightly more powerful than XP in very small
ways (64 bit mostly), but otherwise not really more powerful, and more buggy in
shocking ways.

Can't even burn an ISO image to DVD/CD? File copy doesn't even work usefully for any
serious purpose? Backup tools a joke? DRM infested from stem to stern yet can't even
play a DVD in most versions / HD/BR-DVD in any at all? New critical "remote code execution"
security vulnerability every month or so? Sleep/Hibernate brokem? LAN speed/performance pathetic? Indexing/search a joke?
Doesn't even VIEW MS's OWN .doc files anymore, not even in WORDPAD IIRC?
Doesn't even VIEW PDFs built in?
Locks you out of your OWN files a lot of the time due to its silly permissions that
it gives you no useful way to manage / change?
CHKDSK destroys drives for breakfast?

Need obscenely expensive "ultimate" just to do FAX, Remote Access, encryption, play a DVD -- what are they thinking -- SSH / GPG / FAX tools are all 100% free and standardized
these days in LINUX and really also Windows too, it's a slap in the face to have a
'flagship' modern OS that doesn't even do these kinds of 20 year old tasks in ALL
versions.

DX10 = kind of useless for now, and nothing XP couldn't have had too?

IE7 = nothing special wrt. Firefox / Opera / etc?

MS email = bad joke compared to various open source alternatives?

Firewall next to useless, no real ability to customize rules in a sysadmin friendly
fashion.

etc. etc.

LINUX runs all over it in terms of backup, LAN performance, file copy / management,
web, email, stability, system administration friendliness / tools, etc.

Basically VISTA is useful to run stupidly DRMed software like video games until
LINUX supports them, and beyond that, who'd WANT to run it other than people
making a buck doing development for it?

That's a good find, even if ProcessExplorer (which I use to good effect on my XP system) won't work in Vista 64.

It works great in Vista64. What about it causes a problem? (I haven't used it much, but it loads and shows process info and CPU usage....)

i installed the leaked SP1 patch for vista ultimate x86...and good GOD this is 10000000000x better than what it used to be.

all the problems that i had (like half of the OPs at least) are completely gone! vista is sped up to at least xp's levels and memory usage hovers around 500 and doesnt really go way up for no reason anymore!

I'll check it out again - I bet it would be hugely useful for our OP here too
