Finally got to installing the cat 4.8 drivers... big mistake - that 12% performance increase in Doom 3 ATi wants us to believe... I gotta think ATi is optimizing entirely for demo speed and in return hurting gameplay. So much fun. =(
I've got a 256bit 128meg 9800 non-pro (stock speeds), XP 2500+, and with the cat 4.7 drivers I can play Doom3 1024x768 w/ high quality without any real problems. Since putting the new & "improved" cat 4.8's there is a severe drop in gameplay, every time a monster spawns onto the map, the frame rates drop like mad. Every time I open a door, the pause is atleast twice as long.
Put the cat 4.7's back on, and wow - the jerkiness is gone, all is smooth again! Oh I wonder who I can pawn this card off to & get myself an nVidia card once again... There's a couple older games too I play, like FF7 & Hitman: Codename 47, bad on ATi hardware, flawless on an FX5600 I had for a while.
