*sigh* Oblivion keeps crashing

For some reason everytime I go into the church in Kvatch it loads, then there is a black screen and nothing, I can't even alt-tab or ctrl-alt-dl, have to restart. PC is stable everywhere else. I can try lowering my OC and all that but does anyone know of any major things that are causing crashes otherwise?

Mine was crashing when I accidentally set my RAM timings to be too aggressive. Windows ran fine for an entire day, but Oblivion would crash to the desktop every 2 minutes.

I had one crash so far and it sounds similar to yours. I'd just started the game up, been in it for maybe 2 minutes and then the monitor dropped into standby/no signal or whatever and I think there was a faint sound repeating. I had to restart the whole machine.

It seems more like a hardware problem, since I'd expect CTD if it was the game. But the losing all video is strange, I've never had that before. My system is overclocked, so its possible all the stability testing didn't catch it. However, a lot of people on the forums said they had a similar issue, only more frequent.

I haven't had it happen since, but its a bit troubling. I don't know if I should blame my overclock, my powersupply, video card overheating or if its a game bug that some how causes it.

Still, its a lot more stable then morrowind is for me overall...which is NOT what I was expecting.

In another thread some guy said that HDR + Nvidia hardware was causing this. I turned off HDR and switched to AA and it worked!

(then crashed to desktop later for some other reason lol) grr

Restore the .ini file?

I know I tweaked mine last night and after a few hours it would lag out similar to a mem leak and would cause a CTD. I also began having artifacts with my 6800 U and upgrading the drivers to the .25's fixed this. Whatever the issue may be, it is most certainly software-related. GL.

yeah, that happened with morrowind for me. i was stable in every other thing. games, prime, memtest, occt whatever. but morrowind would crash me out at some point nearly every game. one memory timing was all i chaged, tref iirc.

Thats what I usually do...but in this case I just couldn't wait. Its working pretty damn good for me, but you know how initial releases are...YMMV.

Yeah. I'm suprised at how well it runs for me. I played for about 4 hours straight last night. Only my video card is overclocked.

Its not automatically Nvidia and HDR because thats what I have and it runs great.
Every third time I Exit the game it gives me an error message.
But never in the game.

thats what i get too shorty running hdr so its not nv/hdr alone causing the problem.

my guess is still a ram problem.

Very doubtful,I have it set on default settings not overclocked and using Crucial ram which passes memtest86+ all the time,by disabling HDR in options does improve stability with random black screens ,especially with NPC dialogue, however this game does need at least two more patches IMHO maybe more.

Bottomline quite a few people are having the same problem.

the obligatory- memtest stable isn't windows stable 😛

kidding aside, yeah, it definitely needs a patch or two but there are also plenty of people running it with no or minor problems. yes, even with nv and hdr.

99% sure it is the game ,when you have all the latest drivers and can play other games fine all day ,only leaves one conclusion, either the game or some sort of settings in options it does not like, personally I can play it all day with no more then about 3 crashes in 24 hr period with HDR off.

Try disabling self shadows they are a bug of the game and cause either corruption on some shadows or crash..

This will prolly come off as a flame but it isnt one I promise... just curious.... so here goes.....

WTF do you need to OC a 4400+ X2 ? 😛

I had problems with sound card drivers needing updating which caused very regular crashing ... and also with codecs that crash out on some of the animations. After resolving these two issues I played last night for 2 hours with nary a crash. I don't think it is 'solved', but I think I have minimized the problem.

it is not so buggy that you need to wait . . . i do have the occasional hard lockup . . . but i save often enough that it is no big deal. 😉

and i did notice the frequency of crashes increased as i maxed out the setting . . . especially shadows . . .

I have been playing with various settings and I have notice best settings for me at 1600x1200 res is bloom with no AA,this gives me 100% stability.HDR enabled gives me the worst stability,it is not bad but not 100% stable.

When I first loaded and played Oblivion after a little bit of 3D action, it would go to a black screen. Everything such as the menus worked that weren't 3D.. I checkd my temps on my 7800GT and they were a bit high.. over 81C. I cleaned my vid card heatsink and reapplied some arctic silver and dropped my temps 10C and only had that problem once since then, but I can't repeat it now.

another thing that caused me crashes, was setting one of the tweaks that allows things to load as another process.. it crashed EVERY time until I set it back to 0.

Once in a while the oblivion will crash on mines, usually it's the programs problem . I'm not sure it's my hardware at all @_@, but overall it ran pretty fine.

Yep same problem for me. Oblivion was running great for a week. Then yesterday I installed an extra stick of ram. The game started just dumping me to desktop every 10 minutes of gameplay afterwards. I've changed my timing down a bit and now it seems fine.

The weather was warm today and I had to clean my heatsink since my CPU temperature started exceeding 85C in-game.

85C ? In CPU or it was a mistake you meant GPU? Man this thing is burning if it's the cpu Drop that temp immediately... :Q
