*sigh* my sister is so naive

So I'm planning a 7 day solo backpacking trip somewhere in the Appalachians this summer, my sister called, we talked about random stuff, it came up. In the process I mentioned that I wanted to bring a gun along (I'm not, because I'm a Junior in college, my parents have a strict "no guns" policy, and I can't keep it on campus, so I don't own one). Suffice to say she sharply inhaled over the phone. I explained that if I hypothetically did it would serve the same function as my emergency GPS beacon. Just peace of mind in case I get attacked by some animal and/or person. Probably not going to be used, but it can't hurt to bring it along.

She says "no it's not the same, because it kills things.".

Well no shit sherlock. If some rabid animal comes at me and I don't have a choice I'm probably going to kill it. Unless it's a bear, in which case I'm running like hell. 😛 I mention this she says, "well we disagree about this subject". So what? If a rabid animal came at her and she had a gun she wouldn't shoot? *sigh* she makes no sense on stuff like this. Like that time we debated gun control laws and when she vaguely referenced Britain's gun laws I asked "which ones?". She couldn't even tell me their policy on hand guns.

Yet when I brought this up she said "but this isn't a debate, it's just a casual conversation and you should take my word that I know what I'm talking about because everyone knows Britain's laws prevent gun crime." Yeah, I should take your word when you just admitted you don't know the specifics (or arguably the generalities) of what you're talking about? Let alone applying the British system here. It just wouldn't work here IMO, but that's for a P&N thread. What her entire argument amounted to was "gun laws are currently bad and should be improved". That's not a debate, it's not even a discussion. It's a vague point that no one can disagree with. Kinda like most of Obama's campaign in Germany. (For the record, I like Obama)

Sad thing is, she's the most intelligent person I know. Triple major, 4.1 GPA in all APs in high school, etc. Yet she's stuck in this idealistic ivory tower and doesn't even know it. She thinks because she spent 2 months in Morocco, living with one of their highest class families, that she "knows how the real world is". Hell I may not have that much of an idea myself, but at least I admit when I'm ignorant. At the very least I sure as hell know more than she does. She doesn't even use the bathroom at Gas stations because "they're disgusting and unsafe." Maybe so, but that's what common sense and situational awareness are for. If you see something you think is unsafe (ie: a shady group of guys), then go to the one down the road. Not that difficult. Hell I've used bathrooms where the key was attached to a night-stick and been fine. 😛 Although granted I don't look like an easy target.

Is she a vegetarian? If not, tell her to STFU. If she is, cram some bacon in her mouth and tell her to STFU. Sometime living things need to be killed.

This is the only solution.

Also, if she is attractive and you really want to give her a taste of the real world, you need to send her my way.

I could show her things.

I'm sure once you explain to the bear that once he's a maneater, he will be hunted down, he will see reason and let you be.
People have to understand that a gun is a tool and that it has it's uses. There just have to be rules so the tool isn't misused.

I'm always hesitant to argue major issues with family and friends. Most people already have strong opionions on the issues and the discussion will not change their mind but might lead to ill feelings.

Thankfully no; and she's emotionally fragile as hell. If I did tell her to STFU it'd probably shatter her for a week. We're really close, even more so than your average siblings IMO. Blatant ignorance just pisses me off.

Guess she's ok with the drive up to the country then. Maybe kill a deer, couple small animals accidentally.

Yep, I also pointed out that alcohol kills more people/year than guns. She brushed it aside and didn't even acknowledge the point. She's just fanatically anti-gun for no apparent reason.
