Sigh, I want to like Android, but...

I trade stocks pretty actively, started making more $ trading than I do working several years ago, and my brokerage app has to work.

Dug up my nexus 6 yesterday, figured I'd use it for a while...

2 hours later, after sequential upgrades of Android (another pain point, 4 updates to get to 6.01 IIRC), my app I have to use on a flagship Android device locks the nexus 6 up, and doesn't populate any screen with any data.

Yeah, it's going on Swappa, and I'm back to iOS :(

Update, it's definitely the app, everyone's having problems with it.

And you think that the problem doesn't reside in your stock trading app because?

I know it's the app, but my brokerage prioritizes iOS, I've had a couple convos with them, they flat refused to develop an app for BlackBerry OS's. Am sure they'll tell me the bulk of their customers aren't on Android 6.0, so it's low on the priority list.

From past experience, the Android app will be buggy as hell for months, most of the trading I do is with options, so it's a PITA to figure out a trade, then the app just flakes out instead of doing what you want.

I assume you tried a basic uninstall and re-install? Depending on how many Android versions you jumped up, there have been issues with older versions of apps.

I have accounts with most of the big houses and their apps all work fine on Android. Why not name the company - it's not a big deal.

The thing is, I shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get the damn thing to work.

Honestly if you consider the 30 seconds it takes to uninstall and re-install an app "jumping through hoops", then you probably are better off on iOS.

These things happen and some transitions like Android switching from Dalvik to ART unfortunately wasn't a seamless transition, though the overall and long term benefits were worth it.

It's Android's having to tweak it sometimes (though it's way less than it used to be) vs. Apple's occasionally flaky cloud services (whoops your data is gone forever).

<edit>Now if it turns out the app just doesn't work well on 6, that's honestly more the incompetence of the company. I'm directly involved in the mobile apps my company provides (Fortune 500 company) and getting stable and usable apps on both ecosystems is not hard these days. Releasing new features on one platform vs the other first may be a timing/resource decision, but a company who can't get apps working with core functionality is just incompetent.

So you're complaining about a couple of security updates and 6.0 and 6.0.1?

No, I'm complaining that a mission critical app doesn't work for me, and that Google cant seem to consolidate updates.

It is the app, I read the reviews, everyone's having problems.

Please forgive my Android rant, sorry all.

Some app makers priorities both OS, some put more effort into their iOS port. It happens. One is not superior to the other, choose which one based upon your needs.

It's the app, reinstall doesn't fix it. If you read my first and last post, you'd have known that, but I appreciate your inaccurate and uninformed post :)

Still no actual app name though? Why not at least do a PSA for other Android users.

Shitty etrade app; blame android.

Makes perfect sense.

My tradeking app works flawlessly btw.

If your trading platform were on Windows and iOS, but crashed a lot on iOS, you probably wouldn't blame iOS. You'd blame the developers for making a buggy app for an OS that has millions of users.

No it's still a valid point that most US companies focus on iOS first and Android second, though the separation in general shrinks year after year - due to platforms maturing and frankly mobile becoming core to all companies with a digital presence.

For any competent org, it's unacceptable to not have a functioning app on both platforms - they're simply used by far too many people. Same as if any merchant site didn't work on say all versions of IE - you just can't do it.

However I guessed it was etrade - they've had some rocky years and I recall hearing that there had been quite an exodus from their dev and UX teams. Doesn't surprise me it's them.
