Got mine about 20 minutes ago. Posting on it now, via wired ethernet.

The router is definitely easier to set up than the Belkin refurbs i got earlier, seems smoother and more professional-looking. Will post back about the print server when i get a cartridge for mine and track down the drivers, and will post about the wireless when i find el cheapo wireless card...

Wired ethernet is working fine, 100mbs connections detected on my machines and dsl modem connected without problems.

Got my router today also, setup was easy in just a few minutes.Only working from the wired network right now but as soon as my laptop gets back I will see how the wireless does.

I got mine a few days ago. It works fine. I was able to replace a switch, router, and wireless access point with this one device, plus it added the print server which I was looking to buy anyway. The wireless range is a bit poor, but enough for my needs. The print server is a little slow too, but manageable. Port 1 on the switch seems to be stuck on uplink mode which caused me a bit of a headache trying to figure out what was going on.

What's the difference between "uplink" and "wan" on this thing? I thought an uplink port was a wan port...? If i uplink this to my router, and have this act as an access point / switch, wouldn't i just connect the main router to the dsl, and connect the wan port on this one to a regular client port on the main router?

Incidentally, this router is also running *really* hot, especially on the bottom side of it...anyone else notice this? Nothing like that's happened with any of my other routers, is it something i should worry about?

What do you mean by poor wireless range...how far will it send a useable signal, and with what card? (and through what)?

When in LAN mode, the first port is supposed to act like a regular switch/hub port (like the other four). When in uplink mode, the first port is used to connect to another hub so more computers can connect to the router.

Mine is also really hot on the bottom. I was going to put my DSL modem under it, but it was like 130 degrees. I guess it's that hot because there's so many electronics inside (router, wireless AP, print server).

I leave mine a few inches above the ground in the corner. I can get a fair signal through one wall about 20 feet away. Any farther and the association drops once in a while. This is with 128-bit WEP enabled. Previously, my Netgear ME102 AP gave me about 50 ft. from the same area.

The only problem I have with this router is that when I try to access the virtual server, the router crashes.

In lan mode, it's a regular port, but in uplink mode, how is it different from the "wan" port?

I should be able to connect another router/switch/hub downstream of this one on any rgular port, right? So i would only need an "uplink" if it was connected downstream of another router, like if i was using it as a switch...seems like it's the same thing as the wan port.

How do i connect another router to this one as a switch, and still have this router assign the ip's for the entire network?

The WAN port is not the same as the uplink. It's purpose is for connecting to the cable modem. The uplink port is used if you don't have a crossover cable. For instance if you want to connect a switch to the router you plug a straight cat5 cable into the lan1 port in uplink mode on the router, then plug the other end into any regular port on the hub/switch. If your switch has an uplink port you can plug one end into that and the other into any normal lan port on the router. It works either way. If it was a crossover cable you would just plug both ends into normal lan ports on both router and switch.

If i want to use a second router as a switch, "under" this one, so this one assigns all ip addresses on the network, how would i configure the second router?

Do i have to set the "gateway" to this router's ip somehow...?

Update: This router is a POS.

It's hung on me three times in less than an hour now, requiring pulling the plug on the router and restarting all the machines on the network each time. This keeps happening, this piece of junk is going back to OD.

You should just have to disable the DHCP server on the attached router and possibly change it's IP address to match the Speedstream's. example, if the connected routers IP is 192.168.1.1 you would have to change it to 192.168.254.x to match the speedstreams 192.168.254.254 config.

Oh...so i should give it the same ip as the speedstream, so they read as one device? Hmmm.

Anyone know how to fix the lockup issues? It died again overnight, so it appears flashing the thing is not going to make a difference.

Suggestions? Disabling/enabling RIP? Anyone have any luck with this thing, and what configuration are you guys using?

No do not give it the same IP. You put them on the same subnet. The 192.168.254.x

Office depot has a 14-day returns policy.

That gives me a few more days to fix the lockups.

Getting cascading routers to work for me is not the priority, since i can figure that out later. My main issue is this thing hanging every once in a while, forcing me to pull the plug. Other people have had this problem, and no one seems to know the solution...any suggestions? Has anyone had better mileage by enabling or disabling any of the options?

For people who've gotten it to work, are you using an always on-line connection, or having the router disconnect automatically when the connection's inactive?

interesting reading on this router

It would appear i am by no means alone. I think this one's definitely going back to OD. After belkin's two DOA's, this is my third dead router out of five total orders.

Same problems as 55% of CNET's user reviews...random lockups, and you can only reset the thing and then everything works fine. Some people got speedstream tech support to admit it was a known bug, with no fixes available. Others just had bad experiences with tech support, one person got hung up on...everyone reported techies blaming every other piece of equipment but the router, etc.

Not sure this thing is reliable enough for me, and if i have to reset it that often, it doesn't help my downloads any. I shudder to think what wireless must be like on this machine.

Stay away from this one, guys.

Has anyone been able to get their minolta laser pagepro 1250w to work on the print server that comes with this router? I was able to get my NEC laser to work fine on the print server, but I can't get the Minolta to work. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am running win 98 on both my laptop and desktop. I just wanna know if maybe I should uninstall and reinstall all drivers (printer and router), or if the Minolta just won't work on it period. It could be that when I installed the Minolta driver, I installed the "local" driver instead of a "network" driver -- but when I tried to install the "network" driver, it asked me for my Network info, which I really have no idea about. My NEC laser only had one driver, and I used that one and it worked fine. The Minolta works fine when I connect it to my desktop or laptop directly, so I really don't know what's wrong. TIA!

Not to discount your problems but most of those user comments appear to be from the 2623. A few were talking about the 2624 but most were not. I am glad to say myine has been working fine so far.

Does anyone know Office depots return policy for things bought online? Do they take them at the store?

Just called and asked, and they do.

Yours is working? GREAT...could you please let me know what settings you're using on it? Do you have RIP enabled, do you leave it connected to the internet continuously...no hangs over time?

The impression i'm getting is that this is ok for people who're not using it for continuous access, and so don't mind turning it off and on once in a while...which is out of the question for my apartment network. My belkin refurb is more reliable than this, so far...i'm hoping i can configure it for more reliable performance by matching settings with someone who's got it working ok.

Are you flashed to latest firmware?

I am using it as an access point for one of my desktops and my xbox on one of the wired ports. It came with the latest firmware installed(Version 1.1 Release 07). It is installed downstream from my linksys 4 port router which is connected to my cable modem.

All I did to set it up was disable DHCP, change the IP to match that of my existing network, disabled any firewall settings, changed the SSID to my own, enabled 64bit WEP, and disabled the url filter and the UPnP setting. Rebooted after changing the settings and it's good to go. The only thing I had a problem with was after changing some settings. The lan port that was connected to my linksys would go dead and I had to restart the siemens. This stopped after swapping ports though.
