Sidewinder gamepad, XP Pro

I just installed XP Pro on my PC, clean install (had XP Home before). Everything works fine except my Sidewinder Gamepad (old-school gameport one). I go to the Game Controllers item in Control Panel, and add "Microsoft SideWinder (Auto Detect)". No matter if my gamepad is plugged in or not, I get the controller as "Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro", and not connected as its status. I know my gameport is detected and works, I have all the latest updates (DX 9a, Creative Drivers, etc.), and it will not work. I don't see how it can be a problem with XP since the gamepad worked fine with XP Home. I really do not want to have to buy the newer USB version of the pad, so hopefully someone has a suggestion as to what to do.

Hm. Sounds like you've done just about everything you can. Have you installed SP1? It's a long shot, but maybe it'd help.

i have xp and 2 of those gamepads. both detect fine for me...only difference maybe is that i use dx8 instead of 9. that is all i can think of that would make a difference

All the updates from MS are installed, and I had DX 9 on my PC when I was running XP Home, so I wouldn't think that was the problem.
