Sidewinder 3d Pro problems

Just put together a new system...KT7RAID, T-Bird 1Ghz., PAL35T(with pads removed :0 ), Asus 7700 Pure 32 Mb., SB Live X-Gamer 5.1, 128Mb Mushkin Cas2, Adaptec 2940UW, Plextor 4-12 Max CDR, Zip 250, 2 IBM 75GXP 30.7, NEC Mutlispin 8X/40X DVD, Linksys 10/100 NIC, PC Power $ Cooling ATX 300.

Machine really rocks, but I cannot get my Sidewinder 3D Pro to be recognized by Windows 98(not SE). Updated to the 3.02 driver, and then the extra patch for my stick, but no luck. I'm running DirectX 8.0 Runtime(Microsoft mentioned on their site something about updating to 7.0A if I had the standard 7.0 version)as I figured that it should be better than 7.0, and 7.0A.

Cannot figure this one out, other than possibly getting a new stick(maybe a USB model).

Anyone else have similar problems/fixes?

Try the following (if you haven't done so already):

Update drivers for the X-Gamer
Try using default joystick drives (i.e 4 button joystick / MS Sidewinder defaults)
Revert back to Direct X 7.0
if you have another soundcard/onboard sound, install that and try out the gameport on that

If all that fails, moan at Microsoft/Creative

A friend of mine is having good luck with the old version 2 sidewinder software. Unfortunately I do not have that luxury and I haven't found a fix other than to install it as a thrustmaster and loose the functions of the bottom four buttons. Needless to say, I'm selling it and buying a logitech stick.
