***Sidescrolling Shooter fans unite!*** (PICS!)

Rayden: The modern classic, this is known to be THE best known shooter of the genre. (The screenshot is Rayden 2)

R-Type: The Pioneer of the 'Ball companion'. There are probably 20+ in the series, The first one started in '84

Pulstar: R-type clone, but more fine tuned. Just look at the sexy details! I used to play this in the mall all the time back in 96~

DoDon Pachi: Best action ever. This is only about 4-5 years old, around the time 2D shooters start to die out.

Gradius/Salamander: Known famous for 'Option' sidekicks and collectible power-ups. As with any genre breakers, there are tons of sequels of this game.

Twinbee (Bells & Whistles): Known famous for shooting at bells to collect any desired power-up.

Parodius!!!: One of my all-time favorite! This parody of shooters have all the famous known shooter models (Gradius, Twinbee, etc...)

Any other shooter fans out there? Care to share some of the gems I don't know about?

The very first game I bought for my Playstation was the Raiden I & II combo pack. It's a shame that the genre is basically dead. I'd like to see the amazing games they could make on modern hardware.

There were whole influx of sidescrolling 2D shooters in 3D when 3D graphics first became fashionable. (During the first arrival of PS1) They were damn pretty to look at but sadly the gameplay were no match for classic 2D shooters. This is a nostalgic trend that occurred in FPS.

Nice list so far.. but there are plenty more!!

Thunder Force series (Genesis and Saturn): Great series and part 4 (Lightening Force in the US) is my favorite 16-bit shooter.

Radiant Silvergun (Saturn): Excellent shooter from Treasure.

Soukyugurentai (Terra Diver): I think I got the spelling right...lol.. an excellent vertical shooter that is really intense.

Darius series: Classic series from Taito with plenty of fishies to vaporize.

The "ray" series from Taito (Rayforce, Raystorm, Raycrisis). Another good vertical shooter series.

The Panzer Dragoon series is wonderful with great art direction and music. Its not a typical shooter but its fantastic and I hope for more sequels.

My list absolutely pwns yours. But then again my list is the obvious pioneers within the genre.

I thought this was a discussion of shooters and not some contest of which list was better. Also..just because a shooter is a "pioneer" within the genre doesn't mean its better.

Thunder Force series > R-Type series: R-Type is slow, boring, only requires memorization rather than reflexes. R-Type Final is one of the slowest and dullest shooters in recent memory.

Soukyugurentai > DoDonPachi: DoDonPachi is great..but Souky is better.

...bah..enough of this.. You like what you like and there's nothing wrong with that.

Some other good shooters include Dragon Spirit, Dragon Sabre, Phelios, Axelay, Esp Ra Da, Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Blazing Lazers, Super Star Soldiers...etc.. the list goes on and on..

C'mon shooter fans....name some more!

I'm going to waste you with a Plasma Beam if you don't spell RAIDEN properly. It's in the filename of the damned screenshot you linked to, FFS!

Ditto for leaving out the following two recent gems:

Ikaruga
Zero Gunner 2

- M4H

There are so many one-time arcade-only gems that were just absolutely beautiful. I used to have them all in MAME roms but I lost them....
