theNEOone, is suspect you're a minority in your usaage pattern.. Reason being is I have stats on how many pms there are and buddies/favorites and i'd say there are alot more than you think 🙂

Anyway you can adjust it as you see fit on subscriber..

Cheers

huh, i don't get it?

Jason, are you saying subscribing is coming back? I was a subscriber until it ran out...now I am out of luck with regards to making that change🙁

Also, I have an option to turn off the sidebar, but when I say turn off, it don't! To me, that is broken!

If you are a subscriber running off of the subscriber server you can turn off the "side bar menu".

If you are not on the subscriber server, you can not turn off the "side bar menu".

Yes, when those subscriptions that are already paid for are done there won't be any more. Everyone will be on the same server....forums.anandtech.com

🙁

You mean we'll all be stuck with the stupid menu?

Yeah, I don't understand why options are being made toward subscribers, when subscriptions are longer available and the last few working subscriptions are running out.

I'm not meaning to take away from those that have current subscriptions. I used to be one and would join back up again if I had the chance.

Think of it in a positive light, like something new for spring.😀

Because, on the free forums the ads pay (or help to) for the forums. The ads are on the left hand side. Thus the new nav bar on the left hand side. So on the free forums no space is lost.

On the going away pay (subscriber) forum, the subscription fee pays for the forum. So no ads on the left, and it seems thus the added option for subscribers only, to not have the new nav bar on the left.

I understand the site is fueled by ads but this new layout is awful. On the system I'm using now (17" @ 1024x768) I can only see the first 8 lines of the Hot Deals forum because about 50% of the display is taken up by the AnandTech tabs at the top, a blue bar and a single ad under it, and now My Menu with an ad below it on the left. There's so much unnecessary junk on the top and sides of this forum we're going to need 27" monitors just to display what a 21" would show without these "features" and ads. It's getting to the point that the forums are difficult to read on a 17" monitor and since many are still using them or even smaller that's not a good thing for this site. Oh, and *PLEASE* bring back the subscriptions!!!

Robor, the previous layout used just as much space. As there was at least 3 line feeds of space wasted at the top. I measured it, and we GAINED 10-30 pixels..

Except that this pushes the ENTIRE page over to the right so it's 100px by possibly a few thousand pixels on a big page, instead of 100px by <your browser's width>

BTW, this looks awfully like a poll to me: http://subscriber.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=42&threadid=1293702&enterthread=y

With most people preferring the new layout. Only thing different is some USEFUL nav on the left and the ads are pushed down a bit.
Jason, the sidebar wasn't in the mockups for the new design. Had it been there, I probably wouldn't have voted for it.
Me either.

😕

What browser are you using? I just opened the forums in Firefox and it looked fine.

When you increase the font size it does that. I think that it is better for the text to overlap then to make the wasted space any bigger

Can we have the dropdown menu back? I like the sidebar but I'm just so used to the dropdowns at the top and bottom.

Hmmm... Well I'll take your word for it but it still looks like more wasted space on the top and left side to me. I just can't remember the top 1/3 of the page being taken up by links to the main site (why put them in the forum in the first place?) and a big blue bar with a big blocky Mushkin ad (wasted space on both sides of it also). Maybe it's just more noticeable that the space is wasted under the new layout now?

The real meat (the actual posts) seems more squished down and to the right and long posts appear to be more difficult to read as a result. I love the site and appreciate all of your and other AT employees hard work but I don't like the new layout and/or features at all. I'm not going to whine or threaten to leave the site (how lame right? ) but I do hope this is not the final layout.

EDIT: I liked the dropdown bar also. 🙂
