Sick time or vacation time?

Those of you that get screwed with your lump of PTO need not answer.

This poll has been brought to you courtesy of my employer's sick time policy.

Going to a doctor's appointment (Not ill)?
Sick Time

Kids/SO sick, need to stay home with them?
Vacation

Playing hookey?
Vacation

Misc. impromptu last minute absence?
Vacation

Playing Hookey depends on the reason you give...

Other than that; ST, Vac, Blank, Vac

I haven't taken a sick day in, well I can't remember if I ever have taken one. I've gone home, or been sent home part way through the day, but never got charged with anything.

If I need to take a day off to do errands or just fart around, I book a vacation day.

KT

Edit: I work so much, techinically free overtime, that any time I need to go for an appointment, I just tell my boss I am leaving for an appointment and do not get charged with anything. It evens out in the end anyway.

I use vacation since I can't carry more than 30 days a year (although in 2 years I'll be able to carry over 60.)

I have like an insane amount of sick days that never expire though.

We get 3 personal days per year for all that stuff, after that we use vacation.

Sick time is for actually being too sick to work.

I really wish I could use my sick time for when kids are sick. As a normally healthy 30 something male, I have very little use for the several hundred sick hours I've banked up.

doctors appointment: just walk out of work
kids sick time: company designated "family-sicktime"
hookey: dont tell anyone if boss is away
last minute absense: dont tell anyone if boss is away

and since i work off-location often, "travel days" are a nice perk as well.

ie work project monday-thursday, take early morning flight friday returning at noon. spend rest of day drinking beer

Vacation time for all. Although I do ask any of my employees to take vacation time for a doctor's appointment unless it means missing the entire day.

Cash out at the end of the year?

Where I work, we cannot cash out sick time... ever. It accumulates forever.

Going to a doctor's appointment (Not ill)? --- Sick Time

Kids/SO sick, need to stay home with them? --- we call it Family Sick time

Playing hookey? ---- I bet most people use Sick... I would probably use sick.

Misc. impromptu last minute absence? ---- we have PTO, vacation or one floating holiday.

I should also add that with my employer, the first day of illness is counted as PTO. Every day after that is Sick. After three days you need a doctors excuse to be out.

Given that, almost everyone is "sick" for two days. Never one. If you burn one day of PTO then the second day is a gimme since that's the only way most males will ever use their sick bank.

My wife's employer on the other hand doesn't start sick time until you burn through 3 days of PTO. So you either have to be really freaking sick, having a baby, having surgery, or dying to use it.

The way I see it, Vacation is used when you can plan it in advance. Such as going to the doctor due to a non-sick-related appointment. Unexpected sudden absences are sick leave.

None of the above. I leave whenever I want as long as I get my work done, and only take vacation time for planned absences.
