It is so true. There is no great story or thought put into most games anymore.

It's a shocking concept, ownership in a free enterprise market. I, for one, am also tired of the litany of codes, download restrictions (i.e. I can only use the PSN games I buy on 2 consoles when I own a home with 4 consoles in it), bullshit left of the disc DLC, and the litany of other greedy practices devs/pubs use now.

I will probably be replaying NWN or something 10 years from now, and so will my kids. The game industry has lost one of it's best customers to their own greedy bullshit and GoG is exactly the kind of service a disenchanted former consumer would appreciate.

My thoughts exactly. I pretty much refuse to pay top dollar for glorified rentals and my backlog is large enough that I could probably fill my next decade of free time with the games I own now. Fuck the modern day greedy, draconian bullshit.

Umm.. maybe both of you just suck? like you said, it's an old game, why would people bother cheating, what would they be proving, and to whom? :'(

Both your comebacks just made you not worthy of the electrons that carry your words.
Harsh, uncalled for on point one.
Living in another world on point two.

Good day sir.

Modern gaming is pretty much a disaster right now, everything feels so cheap and driven by the mass markets of casual gamers.

It's a really good time to revisit some older more enjoyable games, I'm incredibly tempted to break out Theme Hospital again.

It is actually the casual gamer that is to blame. Back when this was a niche market, involvement in gaming usually came with a passion for good story and interesting game mechanics. Now, with the advent of the casual gamer, the intent of the publishers is to cater to the widest demographic and therefore make the most money. So..

If 100K people read magazines
And 50K read books like Twilight
and 10K read novels of some substance (as defined by more than 200 pages and greater than a 5th grade reading level)
and 1K are dedicated to great literature

The publishers will publish magazines with a bent towards the Twilight crowd. it's simple math.

OP, have to admit, just last night, I may have climbed over onto your boat. As I have said prior, I am old. A LONG time gamer. My son (My baby at 27), his girlfriend and their friend were looking for a 4th on Diablo 3. I said I am in. Bought digital copy, downloaded set up all the good stuff.
Last night, the servers went down while we were multi-playing.
I said no biggie, I am staying on Skype, I am going to play a little single player and see what a Demon Hunter is like.
Umm Dad, you cant...

Insert Willis face here. Whachu talkin 'bout? (Told you I was old LOL)
Followed by 5 minutes of getting explained that YES, I bought the game and yes, its on my HD but without the servers (READ ONLINE) I cant even play single game.

That was an eye opener.

Got to say I saw that coming. But it was pretty much the reaction I had when I read (months ago) that even the single player game was always online. And I did the same Willis face when i read the head Honchos at Blizzard actually DEFEND the position as "Something the consumers wanted"???? That's why I won't buy Diablo 3 even despite being a rabid fan of the first two (I still play D2 today).

Lol? Did they hint as to why the consumers would want that?

EDIT:

Perhaps they wanted something else, and this was the only way to give it to them?

The argument was something along the lines of "With Diablo 2, you had a separate character for single player and one for multi-player. This was a major concern with consumers. We were able to rectify this problem with Diablo 3 (via always online)" (paraphrased). They also hinted that the always online would allow single player consumers to participate in the RMAH. I think there was a good deal more to it than that but can't find the article atm...

Replaying X-Com now. It's just as much fun as it was back in the day. Hell, the graphics don't even bother me.

Well, I still hate tracking down that last hiding alien though... ugh.

I guess it kind of makes sense. But Open battlnet was a "solution" (that people abused) and if you want to be able to play multiplayer then you should have a multiplayer char.

Probably not stating anything everyone isn't already thinking.

decided i am done with new games for a while.
Bored with all the new mmog. Star Wars TOR. WoW. Everquest

Sony (SOE) twisted my knickers with my game card FUBAR.
Briefly - game card defective. EB Games says cant do anything for you - too bad so sad
SOE says sorry about that - too bad so sad - cant help you. have a nice day.

sick of all the new games requiring internet connections to play as single player.

so i am going back in time. To the Good Old Games (GOG) website and play some old time games
Just got Baldurs Gate 2 complete edition for 10bux. "go for the eyes boo, go for the eyes!"

I ain't touching new "games". Just went on GOG few weeks ago and got Descent3+expansion pack. Pure joy!

Point is both arguments are strawman arguments. As a consumer, I NEVER cared if my single player character was capable of playing in a multi-player game. It never bothered me one bit (never even occurred to me to be bothered by it). And I bet that consumers fell largely into two buckets. those that played Multi-player and those that played single player. And if you wanted both, you could even play Multi-player, solo merely by locking the multi-player game with a password.

And the RMAH is just a bid by the company (read EA?) to grab more cash. if you start off with not caring that your single player game was single player ONLY, then the RMAH is less than useless.

TF2 is still my FPS of choice.

Feels like modern games are specifically designed as "throw away" so that you grow tired of them and buy the next game the following year.

The funny thing is that I consider TF2 to be a modern FPS. It is the most modern one I have played at least. Have shooters really changed much since then? It wasn't released that long ago.

I love older PC games. Still try to catch up on titles I never played the first time around.
