Sick of McAfee, now what?

My wife is sick of the McAfee Security suite since it asks her to validate her subscription *constantly*. (Several times a week). I like the convenience of firewall management and antivirus in the same suite, and feel that McAfee is better than Norton by a longshot. What "suite" or bundle works better. Don't need free, just convenient and solid.

Running a pair of XP Pro machines. Will probably add a Vista box eventually when I build a new box later in the year.

IMO, Norton 2009 is by far the best Norton that I have ever used, the sucker is very lean on system resources due to the massive overhaul Symantec did with it. I liked it so much that I bought it:Q

Take it I did pay less than $5 after shipping and rebates for three licenses:p

IMO, your best bet if you want a security suite is to go with Kaspersy Internet Security. Frys usually has a good deal on it every now and then, unfortunately they are holding at $55 right now, check the hot deals forum to see if it can be had for cheaper.

Avira makes a great anti-virus as well, but I am not sure how their security suite compares.

Be sure that you look over mechBgon's security guide and employ a router's firewall.

Most people can get by with just Avira Antivir Free Edition, a router, a limited user account for day to day use with a well passworded administrator account, updated software and Window's firewall.

Checkout the antivirus detection rate thread to see a few comparisons

I'm sick of Avira. It pops up with random warning messages saying some files in game folders are suspicious that I know are not viruses or malware. There is no way to tell it to permanently ignore those files either, it will keep popping up with them from time to time. I'll probably be going back to AVG next windows install.

Back off on the heuristics.

Double click on Avira icon > Configuration > Expert Mode > Guard > Scan > heuristic > medium or low (depending on what you have selected now)

Do the same thing for the regular scanner.

From what I understand, Kaspersky is the best all around suite. It's firefall is supposed to be the best among suites. The new version is due out very soon if not already out.

If you do a search a buy dot com for Kaspersky you will see a 3 user license for $24.99. If interested I would grab it quick. I'm also not sure if you have KIS 2009 licenses if they will upgrade to KIS 2010 licenses.

AFAIK, they have allowed upgrades to new versions in the past as long as your subscription is good.

Maybe a dumb question, but does she ever click "OK" during any of these prompts to validate her subscription? I've never had McAfee pester me like that except when I ignore the validation request. Once you validate, the nag should go away for at least 45 ~ 60 days.
