Clubs cost $3000-6000/night to rent out

Hmm...dunno how clubs are out in Cali, but I figure that at least some of them work the same way as out here. I know that if you ask to straight-out rent a club, you'll get a figure in the 3-6k range, yeah. But whenever we throw a party, we never ask to rent. We just work out a deal with the club owner. Usually consists of us getting whatever's made at door, and the club keeping all profits from the bar. They'll generally never let you touch bar money, so just work at negotiating door.

For a bboy event, you'd probably have to give the club 25-50% of door, as many of the attendees will be under 21 and therefore not drinking. Even so, it can be a big payoff considering that the most you'll end up paying is a security deposit (though don't plan on getting it back; club owners are notorious for dicking people out of it).

Then again, you could always go warehouse-style and work on corporate sponsors for equipment. I'd think the most important part (other than having a big enough place to hold it) would be music...and good DJs can be pretty dayam expensive, as I'm sure you know. Good luck getting it setup if you do decide to, though. And if it's next may over memorial day weekend near UC Davis, I might just be able to stop by.

Phew. That was EXCELLENT advice, MWilding! I wasn't even aware deals could be made like that, thank you so much. I may call around and try that... the only problems are:

a) Most clubs that I called require attendees to be 21+ (so they can drink), and requested more money (security?) up front if it was to be 18+,

b) About 25% of the hip hop/bboy community who would attend a jam is under 18,

and

c) BBoys don't have much money to begin with... and whine/complain if they have to pay more than $10 admission, especially for a jam thrown by someone (me) who doesn't have an established reputation.

DJ's wouldn't be a problem, I have a couple contacts who could help me land the best names in the biz (DJ Able - Fakshuns Crew, etc.) for the night at a discounted rate ($200-300). I guess I'd have to set up an insane battle people would pay big bucks to see... but then the problem is paying those bboys to battle. Big name ones charge big bucks... Kujo generally charges $1,000 per battle, and Crumbs, etc. charge even more. I might be able to work out some sort of discount/trade (working on Kujo's website now), but we'll see.

Once again, thanks for the info. Very, very informative. 🙂
His name is actually Whisper.

🙂

DOH! So much for my reading comprehension skills. Thank you (and sorry!), Whisper. 🙂

By the way, none of you were at the theater show last night... 🙁 If you had been, you would've seen it was art.... 😉

Crumbs by a landslide. Benji kept doing the same thing over and over, even fvcked up several times. Crumbs played with him a while, then pulled out the big guns.
🙂

that benji vs crumbs video is :Q

Heh... yeah, that battle was hyped for a LONG time... who do you think won?

uh the guy on the right (whoever that was)

crumbs.
What exactly did benji do that started a loud booing at the end of the clip? (pulled crumbs' pants down?)

All I know is that in the Vagabond vs Rock Force, the team on the left dominated. That one guy with the arm pad had to be double jointed in every friggen joint in his body.

vagabond crew had it, they had a teamwork. I think benji is in the rock force crew too.
