Great finds, Mwilding! I wasn't aware the Benji v. Crumbs clip was still available online/hosted anywhere. Thanks for the links. :)

Sometimes it's just for bragging rights, for low-budget jams.

Others, it's for gear (clothes, often Tribal Gear), or a cash prize. Biggest prize to date was probably a $10,000 offered sometime ago... and winners of Red Bull-sponsored LORDS OF THE FLOOR took home $4,000.

The Floor Brats won that one (east coast crew, consisting of Kamel and 11-year old Pookie, a.k.a. El Nino).

I'm actually trying to throw a jam, but it's difficult to find an (affordable) place to have one. Clubs cost $3000-6000/night to rent out, and the best bet would be to find a church with a spacious gym. If anyone's a member of a church who wouldn't mind renting out their space for one night (everyone is VERY responsible, contrary to popular belief), please PM me.

If anyone's not too busy tomorrow night in SoCal, I would highly recommend checking out the theater show. It's not as raw, but it might be a nice "easing in" to the artform. I'll be working at the door for a little while... :p

Alright, i avoided the other threads, because what other people do is their business. If this is something that a kid wants to do, good for him/her.

But, calling it an artform? Puuuuhhhhlease.

Oh, and "dance offs" = "battles". :)

Main battles are held onstage or in the middle of the floor (everyone else clears away). Cyphers are the side circles that take place throughout the jam, where people dance, mess around and play-battle each other.

If you come tomorrow night, you'll see it's an artform. People who don't know it can't appreciate it... it takes rhythm, coordination, balance, incredible athletic ability, etc... I daresay it's comparable to Cirque (on its most advanced level). In fact, one of the bboys (Jacob/Kujo) is a member of Cirque du Solei... the stuff he does is incredible strength-wise.

It isn't just "people rolling around on the floor." There's a hell of a lot more to it.

To me, dancing = art. But that's just a personal opinion.

I must have a different definition of "artform". I know what it is all about, and in my estimation it is far from an artform.

*shrugs* I can appreciate both the fine and physical arts. If you can't, so be it.

I can't if i don't consider it a physical art. I would consider ballet a physical art. battle dancing i would not.

It isn't about appreciation, it is about definition.

EDIT: but i'm done arguing semantics.

Clubs cost $3000-6000/night to rent out

Hmm...dunno how clubs are out in Cali, but I figure that at least some of them work the same way as out here. I know that if you ask to straight-out rent a club, you'll get a figure in the 3-6k range, yeah. But whenever we throw a party, we never ask to rent. We just work out a deal with the club owner. Usually consists of us getting whatever's made at door, and the club keeping all profits from the bar. They'll generally never let you touch bar money, so just work at negotiating door.

For a bboy event, you'd probably have to give the club 25-50% of door, as many of the attendees will be under 21 and therefore not drinking. Even so, it can be a big payoff considering that the most you'll end up paying is a security deposit (though don't plan on getting it back; club owners are notorious for dicking people out of it).

Then again, you could always go warehouse-style and work on corporate sponsors for equipment. I'd think the most important part (other than having a big enough place to hold it) would be music...and good DJs can be pretty dayam expensive, as I'm sure you know. Good luck getting it setup if you do decide to, though. And if it's next may over memorial day weekend near UC Davis, I might just be able to stop by.

Phew. That was EXCELLENT advice, MWilding! I wasn't even aware deals could be made like that, thank you so much. I may call around and try that... the only problems are:

a) Most clubs that I called require attendees to be 21+ (so they can drink), and requested more money (security?) up front if it was to be 18+,

b) About 25% of the hip hop/bboy community who would attend a jam is under 18,

and

c) BBoys don't have much money to begin with... and whine/complain if they have to pay more than $10 admission, especially for a jam thrown by someone (me) who doesn't have an established reputation.

DJ's wouldn't be a problem, I have a couple contacts who could help me land the best names in the biz (DJ Able - Fakshuns Crew, etc.) for the night at a discounted rate ($200-300). I guess I'd have to set up an insane battle people would pay big bucks to see... but then the problem is paying those bboys to battle. Big name ones charge big bucks... Kujo generally charges $1,000 per battle, and Crumbs, etc. charge even more. I might be able to work out some sort of discount/trade (working on Kujo's website now), but we'll see.

Once again, thanks for the info. Very, very informative. :)

for sure it takes coordination balance and athletic ability... for those who look down on them, try and turtle right now. try and balance JUST on your hands.if you can balance (which is incredible on its own) try and lift yourself up the tiniest bit. cant do it? yeah. but just cause its hard doesnt make it art... imo theres not much rhythm in breaking. the uprock is usually pretty ugly... beh. overall kinda poopy.

but dl some mr wiggles stuff... THAT is a dance.

All I know is that in the Vagabond vs Rock Force, the team on the left dominated. That one guy with the arm pad had to be double jointed in every friggen joint in his body.

I disagree totally. The team on the right owned. You are right, though, that huy with the armband was definitely kick-ass
