In the world of working out at the gym, is throwing up a good thing or a bad thing?

"good" only in the sense that it might get a righteous "all right, dude"
from your workout partners.

Not good if you yak on them though!

even better. that would enhance all the reminiscing.

i saw a guy puke while deadlifting at a contest.
it was a gusher of light blue sports drink, but he made
the lift. naturally, everyone likes to remind him of it.

You too? I had some bad fish yesterday, at least I think that's what it was and I hurled too. But I feel fine today. What do you think yours was caused by? Not working out right? I doubt working out can actually make you hurl can it?

Wait you didn't eat something and then go work out before digesting it did you? You know you can't do that right? You know that old wives tale about not swimming for an hour after eating? It has nothing to do with swimming, it has to do with not working out right after eating.

from snopes:
[Engel & Malloy, 1993]

"A form of muscle cramp, stitches are caused by the blood supply to the diaphragm being shut off by pressure from the lungs above and the abdomen below, like a bomb and a submarine attack at the same time.

So what does this have to do with food? Well, if you have food in your stomach you are likely to develop stomach cramps. Here's why: To aid digestion the heart pumps a large volume of blood to the stomach. During exercise, the heart pumps blood to the muscles, and the flow of the blood to the stomach is greatly diminished. Without the blood supply, the stomach muscles suffer from lack of oxygen and, like any muscle without oxygen, develop cramps. "

That's not the same thing. The wooziness that come when working out are accompanied by light headedness, profuse sweating and the shakes. No cramping, but a bit of nausea. It's most often caused by low blood sugar. A condition called Hypoglycemia. The two main causes of Hypoglycemia are a diabetic who takes too much insulin, or an athlete who over exerts themselves and depletes their blood sugar levels too rapidly.

I realize cramps and nausea/vomiting is not the same thing. But consider the possibility that they could be caused by the same thing. If you eat a lot and then work out strenously, and you deprive your stomach muscles of oxygen, those muscles can give up on digestion and then you end up with indigestion.

She did say she was drinking a sports drink, don't those have sugar in them? Well anyway only she knows whether she ate too much prior to working out or got hypoglycemic, or perhaps a different cause altogether. I was just offering up another possible cause. All I'm saying is it's probably a good idea to avoid either one of those scenarios if you're about to take on a strenous workout.

I try to eat a couple hours before going to the gym,I don't know if I had a touch of a stomach bug or what.I had a good day in spite of getting sick,I felt very strong and had a great workout.

When you are *really* training I have found on rare occasions your body just doesn't do what's expected of it.

It's part of what separates an athlete from Joe Wifebeater.

Amanda,The relief was immediate, the sick feeling lifted and I was able to finish my workout

It's amazing what a short timeout can do! :)

Between my excessive workouts and drinking at times I would say there has been times when you are hoping for this resolution ;).

So you're nowhere near inshape then yet.

I've been hitting the gym for close to a year now, and I puked for the first time (due to a workout) only a month or two ago. With a BF % that is <8%, I don't think I'm out of shape.

As Amused has said many times (including in my barf thread), it is often a case of low blood sugar. I now always take something with me (usually a powerade) in case I start to feel nausea. Works like a charm.

Actually I'd never been ill in the gym before,I was just working intensely and with a measured BF of 17.46% I'd have to disagree with your comment, sorry.
So nearly 20% of your body is fat? Better hit the gym harder.

The only time I ever puked was when we ran suicide quarters for over an hour in lacrosse and football. I was such a pussy. ;)

Wonen need at minuim 12% bf in order to menstrate,my BF % is excellent and places me in the range of athletic women.
Menstruate? Arn't you nearing menopause?

ONLY PUSSIES PUKE!!!! PUSH IT!!!!

The only "pause" I might take is to decide if I should kick you next or content myself with biatch slapping your punkish mouth.

Or she is pushing herself farther than just away from the table.

She's a woman too....also depending on 'sport' 20% may be low (long distance swimming comes to mind).

You still probably are. How long were you in lacrosse and football, a season or did you do this throughout high school and college?

ONLY PUSSIES PUKE!!!! PUSH IT!!!!

Last time I think a pic of you was up you resembled what could be best described as 'Jello-like'.

What's your BF?

Actually for her age, 17.5% BF puts her in about the 93 percentile.

I'm aimming to get it well below 16% I won't rest till there's not a single ounce of fat on my waist and abs, there's no excuse imho for any woman to have a waist larger than 24 inches unless she's pregnant.

Well that's good! Hopefully you don't get sick again!

I also hope that I don't get sick when I start going to the gym. I need to start soon, but I'm way too lazy! :p

Hmmm the waist size issue can be used for the average woman more than likely ... but some may have body makeups that allow them to be quite trim but have a thick waist. Also hourglass is today's favorite...there was time in history the 'pear' was the leading favorite, and others.

Were you working legs or just sick with a bug? Sometimes sending all the blood to your legs can cause you to puke. Doing squats in sets of 75 or 100 can do the same thing.

if I were doing 75 reps of weighted squats I'd most assuredly be ill...because somebody would be holding a gun to my head to get me to do that many!:)

What's with everybody jumping down Geekbabe's throat about her BF? Are the personal attacks necessary? She got sick at the gym for the first time ever, recuperated and began working out again. I bet she's in better shape than some of these detractors who hide behind a computer screen.

They need to justify how they are so chubby and jealous. Many still think they are the same as they were in highschool when they took football or wrestled for a season just to get the Letter and some resume material.

Lol,I don't worry about the haters, the people I'm interested in talking to here are the ones who actually try to better their lives via a healthy diet and exercise.
