I was wondering, i need to get a computer together for school quick and just want a really cheap one, probably the p3 or so. But when i get more cash after the holiday i was wondering if it is possible to just replace the motherboard? If so, what size? Mini ITX, Flex Atx, Micro ATX?

Thanks,
mike

If you mean say, p3 to P4 or AMD, not really -- different cooling and power supply.

A good forum to ask what can be done (like one P4 mobo to another) is the small-form-factor forum at www.sudhian.com.

Also, the shuttles are cool and small, but unless you're into lan parties you can get better quality, stability, price (and even quiet) going with a normal mid-tower case.

yea, i understand I can get all of those things out of a mid tower also, (a small mid tower), but i am at college and want the SMALLEST computer possible basically. I am gunna buy a samsung LCD also to replace my 19" viewsonic, which is too damn big for my desk at school ;) and so was my SOHO File Server case ;) gotta love the antec 1030sx-b

thanks for ur info,
mike

the quick answer is, probably not. i haven't seen anything that looks like them, so i'd guess shuttle makes the board themselves. i'm not ever sure it's the same board from model to model (same layout). if you want something small you can get a microatx board and a micro desktop case, which is about the size of a vcr, if not a little smaller. it's not as l33t looking, but it will be more upgradable in the future. the main problem is that the card slots are usually half height (in the really small cases) so your choices aren't as great. but if you go nforce2, that might not be a problem since everything is on the board, and it has decent video.

something like this.
