HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- NASA delayed the planned landing of the space shuttle by at least a day Tuesday after engineers spotted an object that may have accidentally flown out of the space shuttle Atlantis' cargo bay.

Landing had been scheduled for Wednesday morning. But a poor weather forecast, and concerns that something crucial floated out of the space shuttle, prompted the delay, space shuttle communicator Terry Virts told the crew.

NASA engineers spotted the object at about 2:45 a.m EDT Tuesday with a video camera in the shuttle's cargo bay. (Watch the mystery object -- :56)

The object, which circled the Earth in the same orbit as the shuttle and is of undetermined size, probably came out of the shuttle's cargo bay because some jets had just been fired, shaking the orbiter, NASA spokesman Doug Peterson said.

"It's something that we didn't expect, but it's something that we're taking a real close look at," Peterson said.

Meanwhile, shuttle astronauts spent Tuesday packing, indulging in their surroundings and making sure their vehicle is ready for the ride home.

The Atlantis crew checked flight controls -- similar to those on an airplane -- and test fired small jets that are used to guide the shuttle. The commander and pilot used simulations to practice their landing skills.

They also participated in a rare conference call with two other spacecraft also currently in orbit.

"It's a little crowded in the sky this morning," said Jeff Williams, a resident of the international space station the shuttle undocked from on Sunday after delivering and installing a solar panel addition.

"We were wondering if we had to hire some more air traffic controllers for the increased traffic up here," responded Michael Lopez-Alegria from the Russian Soyuz capsule that launched from Kazakhstan on Monday. He's part of the team that will be taking over from Williams' crew.

During the 10-minute conversation, while the space station and shuttle hovered over Australia and the capsule over the Black Sea, the astronauts reminisced about their time together, the times to come and the latest drama in the cosmos.

So when did the space shuttle turn into the groundhog? afriad of its own shadow... sheesh

It's a valid concern - if they had spotted the piece that separated from Columbia on orbit they might have had some warning. Probably wouldn't have changed the outcome, but who knows?

BTW, that piece was tracked by radars, but only noted after the fact.

yeap they are worried it may be part of the shuttle since it has the same orbit. hopefully it is not part of it.

we really do not need another disaster.

It almost certainly came from the shuttle. The odds of some other piece of debris just happening to match the orbit that well are pretty astronomical. The question is whether it is just something left loose in the cargo bay - or is it some piece of tile or such that definitely shouldn't be floating away out there. I'd be pretty suprised if their procedures and attention to detail let something just lying around in the bay.

yes odds are it came for the shuttle. They have to make sure wehre it came from. If its part of the shuttle itself and not junk then they have big problems.

while its neat to think bout that it could be a UFO we all know its just something from the shuttle.

but wasn't that shuttle tile knocked off during the launch when the insulation hit the edge of the shuttle wing? it would have never made orbit...

very true. but at least now they do a examination of the shuttle.

Who flushed? Maybe it's an alien artifact. If Picard were captain he would have his crew bring it into the shuttle bay.

Something separated from the shuttle on the flight and it had radar and ballistic charateristics consistent with the a piece of the leading edge of the wing where the impact occured. Also consistent with the size of the pieces broken out when they fired foam at mockups of the wing during the investigation. So the speculation is that at least some of the damaged material made it all the way to orbit. It's all in the CAIB report.

Unfortunately the radar track on this object wasn't discovered until after the accident when they looked at the data again. I have some opinions on that whole situation as well :|

if it's a heatshield-tile, this would be bad enough. They finally should STOP breaking off/floating away....this is bad.

I cant see them having JUNK in the cargo-bay which might float off every time they open it.
