I got one of these, its a nice little case and a fairly good deal.

Of interest was the way Outpost laid out the order itinerary.

It showed the SV24 as $199 and the Celeron as $60 (give or take a few bucks).

The other thing worth noting is the reviews of the SV24 note it comes with a low profile heat sink and thermal goo. The SV24 no longer ships with these items, however the retail package celeron has the intel heat sink/fan with a nice pad on it that only took me a few minutes to scrape off with a razor blade. So get your own thermal goo and make sure you have a nice low profile heat sink if you're getting an SV24 with an OEM processor.

It runs very cool with one of the compusa 80GB drives in it, and makes a nice little file server. The fans are a little loud, there's a 60mm fan in the back that does the case exhaust, replacing that one would quiet it down a little. Rest of the noise is from a small fan in the power supply and the cpu fan.

If size isnt an issue, its a waste of money, but I wanna put it in a small cabinet where my old pizza box BookPC server resided - it was getting a little long in the tooth. Plus it looks pretty cool, all brushed aluminum, and after I yank the DVD drive thats in it and place a second 80GB drive, I'll have an 850mhz/256mb/160GB server I can carry under one arm. That is of no actual value to me whatsoever but its so technically tasty I cant stand it.

note: easier way to get rid of that thermal pad is to use WD40. spray it on, let it dissolve, then rub away and spray more on. it will take care of it without scratching and much work.

I've built cool 3-way firewalls with these...

Put in a Antec PCI to PCMCIA adapter, put a PCCard Ethernet and a PCCard wireless (Orinoco) card.

Have a kick-ass OpenBSD firewall that has two ethernet ports + wireless port. One Ethernet goes to the internet, the other Ethernet + wireless go to your house.

I was planning on getting a faster processor in one of these, but its still a great bargain. Last time I was at Fry's you could pcik up the SV24 for $249.99, but they might have the combo now...

I've read recently something specifically pointing out that WD40 should *NOT* be used to clean heatsinks, as it leaves behind a residue which seriously hampers thermal transfer. Can't recall where, so whether or not you believe me is a judgment call.

I really want to order this, but just don't have the cash now. Mod that case with a window and wacky paint job, and this would make a nice, but not kick-ass, LAN rig.

I've been thinking of getting one of these for a Divx player. Can anyone comment on the TV out/video capabilities of this unit. I know it has TV out, but is the onboard graphics capable of playing full screen divx files?

Dam,

That is a sweet deal. I just paid 381 (shipped) from Essential computers for the SV24 and a 1Gig PIII processor. This deal practically gives you a free 850 celeron.

i remember when frys had a p3 933 paired w/ this combo for $299. sweet deal!

i immediately sold the processor for $120 and bought a p3-S 1.13 w/ 512kb cache. remember, these are tualatin capable!!

sell the celeron and get something in tualation form, would be awesome w/ the extra cache

since we're on the subject of small shuttle based pcs, i'm thinking of getting one of these, throwing in a CompUSA 80gig drive full of divx / mp3 files, a net connection (for browsing) and making it my "media server".

i think they look really sweet.

Gotta love those japanese translations to English...here's a description of the riser card from the soldam site:

In order to employ a PCI slot efficiently, it has started which can secure the flexibility of the size to a commercial PCI card. Polo-T secures the maximum flexibility of small PC case class via layout using the riser card effectively (PCI card, FDD and FD cable are interfered mutually, so up to 135mm of card length is as a guarantee of operation.)

Wow that Windy Polo - T looks sick as hell. Dammit, I so wish I would have gotten one of those.

I replaced the LOUD-ASS fan in the power supply in my SV24 to a Nidec 40mm, runs much quieter. Probably going to replace the fan in the back with a stock AMD HSF fan. Beware Plextor owners, my 8x Plextor drive sticks out a little bit because the power connector in the back of the drive hits the main power connector for the case. I went out and got a Samsung 24x damn, those things are almost a 1 full inch shorter in length.

Anyway enough of my rant, for you guys interested in buying one of these, also be sure to know that the SV25 is slated to be released soon, as well as the AMD version SS40 and the s478 version SS50

Also, if you are thinking of getting an SV24 and running tualatin (however you spell it) be sure to get the Version 3.0 of the SV24/AV24, version 2.0 does NOT support tualatin.

Most of the 24's are not tualatin capable. In fact I've never seen one with the tualatin version of the flexatx motherboard, I only say "most" because there may be a few around. The tualatin capable units are the 25's.

I wonder if the motherboard from the sv25 or the p4 version is fittable into the sv24 case for future upgrade potential.

In the meanwhile, a 1.1GHz Celeron or P3 doesnt suck. Only reason I'd want something faster is for games and the graphics in this box arent worthy of a faster cpu, and any PCI graphics add-on also would be so hobbled by the pci interface that it wouldnt cut it.

For server apps or a nice portable system, a GHz is good enuff. And I'd bet you'd have a hard time telling the difference between that and the 850.

Outpost does have this bundled with a GHz processor, but its $50 more. Not worth it IMHO.

Your correct regarding the residue left by WD40. I use paint thinner to clean the pad off my heatsinks and then use alcohol to remove any residue. Works like a charm and leaves no scratches. :D

I had this problem also, the simple fix is to use the L shaped molex power connector for the cd-rom drive, and use a standard connector on the HD - the case will still fit nicely even with the standard connector protruding slightly from the HD.

Another nice trick which I have done is to take the faceplate off the cd-rom drive. Cut off the side fins (dremel) off the orginal aluminum faceplate then hot glue it to the front of the drive tray mechanism. You'll to adjust for alignment. I did this by leaving the drive mounted in the case, touching each of the for corners of the drve tray with thermal paste then, pushing the aluminum faceplate on to it to transfer the paste giving me a good indication on where I needed to glue. As for the eject button, start building up hot glue in the area the eject button is. When the drive closes, it should eject again becuase the glue is pushing on the button. Start shaving off tiny amounts until it parks. Because the glue is slightly flexible (around the drive tray), you can simply touch the faceplate in the right area and the drive will eject. This will give your SV24 a clean all aluminum look with a hidden cdr/dvd drive. BTW: The SpaceWalker sticker on the front is also easily removable.

I wish they made this in black steel.. this would look sweet in my audio rack in black.... but Silver makes it stick out like a sore thumb.

goddamit!
not a single one of those upcoming designs provisions a damn agp slot!!
Thats all those things needs to make me and a lot of other people converts. What the heck ? If they have onboard everything they should just give me an agp slot and a pci, not two PCI's!!!!!
just gotta keep waiting for that durned epox 8khm

krunchhead - when was the last time you saw a board with two AGP slots? :p

i think the whole deal with not having an AGP slot is because the integrated video happens to be AGP as well...there probably is a way to get two devices running on the AGP bus...but shuttle probably doesn't see the business need for it now....
