Shuttle SS51G and P4 2ghz, do I need a CPU fan?

I'm thinking of buying a Shuttle SS51G and adding a P4 2Ghz chip to it. I noticed that the SS51G comes with a pretty nice fan/heatsink thing, but I'm not sure if that is for something other than the CPU.

I can buy the P4 2Ghz for cheaper if I get the OEM package *without* the fan/heatsink. So does the SS51G already have the fan/heatsink that I need, or should I buy the retail P4 2Ghz with the seperate fan/heatsink on it?

The SS51G includes a heatpipe assembly with one fan. The retail heatsink is useless as it defeats the purpose of the heatpipe and will block your CD-ROM from installing. If you record high temps you might want to replace the included 80mm fan, but the heatsink is fine. We'll be testing one with a 2.533 GHz cpu tomorrow, I'll return with results then.

I have a 1.8A running at 2.50 GHz (139*18) in a SS51G at 1.64 Volts

If you set the fan in the bios to kick in at a temp of 52C, the fan never kicks in, even looping 3DMark for 12 hours.

IMO the heatpipe is on par with the standard Intel HSF (i've tried that too) (I cut the back off the bottom of the drive cage)

They're cuddly bundles of fun. The DDR can run at 200MHz if you've got the right ram.

Open @ 72f Ambient - CPU is running at 40c.
Closed @ 72f Ambient - CPU is running at 46c.

I believe using AS3 (Unavailable to me today) would improve these results. The fan ramping up and down constantly is a nice touch. Runs very low power most of the time...then speeds up on reboot or serious load. I'll have more temps in a bit.

The system went from a Prime95 session to 56c at one point, we'll see what else happens.

GF4 Ti4200 64MB...edited the post, thanks for the heads up. We'll get some 3DMark 2001 scores up around 8PM. PCMark2002 a little afterward.

With the default assembly and Ti4200 64MB the system remained at 51c to 61c under every condition. I don't have the scores here at home with me, but the 3DMark2001 SE score was 11513 on all defaults and the Det 40.41's.

I wasnt aware that the SS51G mobo had voltage adjustments. Is this thru a new bios or something?
