I enjoyed this read too. Do you guys know how much this barebones system will retail for? Or did they mention that in the article ( I really should get to bed, haha).

Oh wow! I was hoping they'd keep the new, improved cooling system.
This system is SO nice! :D

Ahh, the system that Shuttle posted on their website a little while ago then pulled from the main page. But I was still able to get directly to it.

Appears that its now official since its been reviewed by at least one site. But its still not on Shuttles website.

Anyway, I am definitely getting this system. I'm glad they chose the P4 as their CPU since they run cooler. Heat and noise are the killers of systems like this.

I'll plan on getting one as soon as they are available.

It looks pretty sweet, but the BIOS, sound, and stability problems with the review sample make me a little hesitant to get one right away. I'll let you test it for me :D

Yeah, I want one too... its a shame I built my P4 before this was out. :)

Is it just me, or should some enterprising company put these together in bulk with decent components (P4 2.26, 256 to 512 MB of PC2700, Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB, DVD/CD-RW combo, decent vid card) and sell them with a 15" flat screen to every frigging college student on the planet? :) You realize you could put this and a flat screen (along with a keyboard, a small set of speakers, and a mouse) in a relatively small Rubbermaid tub to move? It would beat carrying my Antec SX1040B and Sony G420S home. Not to mention, its a bunch cheaper than a laptop (which, in my experience, mostly sit on the student's desks in their room anyway).

Anyways... looks neat... I hope the stability was just a fluke. I'll be watching closely!

Some considerations for the ultimate dream SFF machine:
- Where are the TV-Out ports that the older versions used to have?
- The serial ports should be removed, putting in place another ethernet port (for router capabilities), TV-Out and/or 2nd VGA (nForce 2 style).
- Serial ATA is all this baby hopes for to improve air circulation (SATA cable are still thinner than the rounded cables provided).
- Although the SPDIF conector in the back is nice, isn't the one in the front more than necessary?
- Integrated wireless ethernet.
- If prices were a bit lower ($200 range), I would definately pick one up.

Okay, this thing is being discussed in two places (actually three if count Aduls repost thread ;) ).

Here is the thread from Article Reviews.

To sum up whats there and not here:
- valnar posted a link to the press release here.
- Drakino posted a link to the Via Hardware review here.
- We have a supposed Shuttle rep posting there by the name of OdieXPC.
- OdieXPC states that the SS51 will be out in mid-August and retailing for $339.

Also, to answer some questions posted here.
- The TV-Out is an add-on card that goes into the AGP slot kind of like the CNR riser cards. The Via Hardware review has a picture of it. If you use a different video card, you will have to find some other way of getting a TV-Out.
- Serial ATA is obviously not out yet (least no HDD support it natively). Though I would love to have this, I see why they didn't include it.
- The Optical Out on front might be to connect things like Mini-disc players. But yeah, its a bit redundant.
- I wish they would go beyond getting rid of the serial ports and get rid of the PS/2 ports. I don't use any of those anymore. But we can't have everything now can we? :)
- I see no reason to have a second built-in ethernet port. A router machine won't need the PCI slot for anything so it can add one there for $15.

Anyway, lets keep the thread here since more people read General Hardware.

So a person should be able to just take the machine, add ram and cpu, and have a pretty good workstation. I am guessing that would bring the total price up to about $500 right?

Add CPU, RAM, HDD, CD-ROM (or variant), floppy drive (if you want), keyboard, mouse and a monitor and there you go. Of course you can improve the video or sound by adding those. Or you can add a wireless networking card.

This type of machine looks kick ass and I've been waiting for it for a long time. The lack of AGP had been holding me back, but no more!

little more than 500!
cpu ~ 150 (for 1.6A now, hopefully the higher p4s will drop down to about that..)
RAM~ 150 for 512 mb (depends on alignment of the stars)
video card ~100 (R8500?)
Hard drive ~60-100
CD drive _10-30 etc

Any clue about that stability issue Anand ran into?

I've been working with Anand on the stability issues, and its appears he received a bad board (or the board was damaged in shipment). None of the other reviewers ran into these issues (you can read them at Hexus.net, Firingsquad.com, Viahardware.com, and OCworkbench.com).

Regarding the TV-out, the SS51 ships standard with an AGP riser that includes DVI, S-VIdeo, and Composite outputs for the onboard video.

Make sure to catch Shuttle at QuakeCon, where we'll be giving away SS51's!

Fair enough :) ... Strange that Anand didn't mention it (I think).

I was not refering especifically to this machine, but to a future SFF system. I agree that it's ok for not including SATA now.

We'll have to wait for an Abit MAX variant. ;)

No one mentally sane would buy this machine only to work as a router. Combining this capability on a full-fledged system would be a big plus (especially for me).

DVI as in typical computer connection DVI or the copy protection DVI the MPAA is trying to force on us? I would normally assume typical computer, but since it's on a riser with composite and S-video, I had to ask.

I still think they need to put a PCMCIA slot on there for wireless network cards. That way you don't loose a PCI slot to get wireless connectivity.

Be kind of cool to have some sort of PCMCIA slot in place of the floppy drive. I haven't used a floppy in years now so that bay is pretty much useless for me (I don't plan on getting two hdds, 120 gigs is fine for me).

In general I aggree with the features that people have talked about for future releases.... I still us a PS2 keyboard/mouse that should have another couple of years in them.

The one thing that I do see as a big miss on a system like this (and I'm suprised that nobody pointed it out yet) is there is no modem connection?!? I can't be the only person on this site that doesn't have Cable/DSL/Sat am I? If I were to but this (actually I'd go for the nForce2 version), then I'd have to buy a new modem (hey.... at 56K that old ISA modem works as well as any PCI modem would) then I'm stuck with no future expansion.

Ok given all the USB/Firewire ports what would I need? I guess I'd like to leave the PCI slot open for a wireless card: either your favorite 802.11 a/b/c/d/.... flavor, or one of those older Homenetwork cards if they if they still exist. Who knows maybe somebody in the futre will make a 802.11/Bluetooth combo card then you woul have all bases covered.

I see two major markets for this system: Corperate sites that don't need/allow the users to have 3 CD's and a DVD player, and the college/tight space/I need a new computer to replace my p-90 group of people. For the second group no modem means the extra card, means no expasion. Seems odd not to include one (and not one of those damn CPU intensive win-modems either)

The higher speed p4s run just as hot as a athlon i believe. thats why they have the huge heat synks that sometimes require you to screw it to the case.

Modems are low-bandwith enough to be available in USB versions, so that's not really a major problem.

Looks good to me, I've been designing my own SSF ever since I saw the SS40 and SS50, but with no AGP slot those were'nt an option. Is Anand going to be posting more results when he recieves his new mobo from Shuttle? Hexus.net reported problems with DDR333 memory, he had to change settings and ended up using DDR266 in order to get it to run, said he thought it might be heat related. While researching my own SSF project I've found a couple of 1U PSU that have 300 watt output, do you guys still have the SS51 in the lab, I'm wondering what the dimensions of the stock Achme PSU 200 watt unit was maybe it could be upgraded to one of these higher output units. Another site that reviewed this said that the Sunon fan was fairly loud at normal settings and they experienced it getting warmer enough to kick it on just watching DVD's. Is it a standard 80mm unit and would it be possible to swap a quieter one. I thought adding a intake fan to blow directly on the video card and an additional exhaust fan on top might help the situation, maybe Vantec Stealthes or similar quiet units. I've read that the new nForce2 boards won't be available til September, does that mean the Shuttle SS41 as I assume it will be called won't be available until this time? Looking forward to more comments from everyone and hopefully an update from Anand & Co. when the replacement mobo arrives. - Szandor

I'm not the speed freak like I was a few years ago. I don't see the necessity to get the near 3 Ghz CPU's. My Athlon 1.2 is doing just fine and I see the video card as being its greatest problem. That and it doesn't use DDR RAM or anything of that sort.

I don't do digital video editing, DIVX encoding or anything CPU crazy like that. So a 1.6A P4 would more than suit my needs and they run pretty cool.
