with celeron 430 retail chip (well probably retail from these deals in the past). with the new k48 ssf with dvi.

even better..

http://shop1.frys.com/product/5661311

on frys.com you can get just the barebones for $119.99 with free shipping (for people without a frys nearby, hell this is a good deal even for me)

So depending on how quick you want it....

119.99 is great since a celeron 430 is maybe a $20 cpu anyway... plus you dont have to waste gas to drive to frys .

Great price! One caveat though is that there are no expansion slots. Zero. No PCI, no PCIe. Nada. The case has a blank in the back, but there's no physical slot on the motherboard to match up to it.

What would be better is the motherboard from the K45 in the K48 chassis. That way you get the optical drive bay as well as the PCI slot. 😀

There also are no optical/coax digital out pins on the motherboard, so if you want digital out you'll need to buy a USB "soundcard" (Newegg has a Turtle Beach for $27)

yeah im pretty sure all these limitations are part of their pricing structure.

i mean adding a better power supply, pci-e slot and optical wouldnt cost that much. but then again an sd30g2 is like $190 .

its sad that there really arent any competitors in this space. it seems like all th eother companies that were doing it for a while gave up.

Did anyone confirm whether or not the K45 and K48 are in fact different mobos? K45 lists 1333 fsb whereas the K48 does not.

Well, both use the 945GC chipset which does not officially support 1333FSB and has only a partially functional PCI/PCIe lock. While some systems can work fine at that FSB, some people have reported problems. One person around here specifically reported a problem with his K45 not being able to run at 1333FSB. I've personally tested a motherboard with the same chipset that advertised 1333FSB support, and while it did autodetect and run my E6550 chip just fine, the PCIe slot was dead at that speed so I was limited to using onboard video (didn't have PCI card handy for testing).

Well I know this board is geare dto "geeks" ect, but this system isn't made for upgradeablilty. It's made to be in all in one solution. Add a Processor, HDD, and Memory and you have a functional web browser, office computer.
I have a k45 and will probably get a k48 for the full size optical drive bay.

One thing of note is that these are limited to 2GB memory max. 🙁

^ true, but with digital audio it would make a perfect music server, with a PCI-E slot for a low-end card with hardware decoding it could be a great high-def HTPC.

It looks like Shuttle crippled it to not compete with the $250 models. Understandable, but disappointing for us geeks 🙂

That's where I was confused as I didn't think the 945 supported 1333 but the K45 lists it as official whereas the K48 doesn't. I've heard rumors that these were basically the same system in different chassies.

The K45 was very popular as a WHS box, since WHS can be installed from a USB thumbdrive, negating the need for a optical drive. I suppose the K48 would fit the same bill, the bonus being the easily installed non-slim optical drive.

the 945gc doesnt officially support 1333 bus, but a lot of boards have it as a setting anyway.

so this probably supports it as well as i've seen it bundled with a e8400 at some stores.

the boards are similar, but the k48 board has no pci slot , but has DVI out. power supply is the same

Wish I woulda known that, I woulda grabbed one a week ago for my E8500 to make a chep-o HTPC since my TV has a DVI input. O-well, funds are dried up now anyway.....
