Shutting primary display (DP) off rearranges projector to be primary

Hello,

I recently acquired a partially new machine, incl. graphics card and display. It's a Nvidia GTX 960 and the display connects via displayport. An optoma projector is connected to the same graphics card via hdmi.

Issue: When I turn off the primary display Windows makes a "removable device disconnected" sound and the Optoma gets labelled primary. This is OK for the default Win 10 video player but VLC tends to throw a fit (won't cover shortcut menu, video freezes). This wasn't an issue when the primary display(different one) was connected via DVI because it didn't leave Windows' radar when powered off.

There's no "Workstation" in the latest Nvidia drivers:

and Wizmo does not appear to work to blank the primary display or make it go into some sort of power save mode. The Monitor Off utility needs ancient .net-frameworks and refuses to run.

Is there a downside to removing the DVI cover from the GTX 960 and fetching the DVI cable from the attic other than the nifty connector dp uses?
