shutdown problem

my computer reboots and instead of shutdown. i'm running windows xp pro with hardware specs listed in sig.. how do i fix this problem?

Reinstall os? How long have you had it installed?

Has it been doing this every since you initially built or did it start doing this at some point afterwards ?

I ran into a similar problem while working on a friends old NEC PC. It had been previously used as a server. There was a BIOS setting that made it restart rather than ever shutdown. Also check in Windows.... there is a place during the install of the OS where you are asked if it is to be used as a "home desktop", or something else. I think 'server' is one of the options.

Sounds like a hardware driver causes a system fault during shutdown. Suggest going into the System Properties dialog, Advanced tab, Startup and Recovery button. On that Startup and Recovery dialog you want to UNcheck Automatically restart. There's a chance, then, that the system will show you a blue screen the next time this happens. (Might not, depends on what part of the shutdown it occurs during, I think.)

You might also want to download the UPHClean service from Microsoft and install it. It's a service which oversees the behavior of other services at shutdown time, forcing an amicable shutdown of stubborn services that might get hung up during system shutdown.

Did you check the Event Viewer to see if you had any errors in the System or Application logs? These events might not be recorded there, but there might be clues to indicate the troublemaker.

right clik on a blank space on the desktop, then select properties from the popup menu.
clik 'power' button the monitor power section to open the power options properties window.
on the power schemes section clik the down arrow then select home/office desktop. NOT the ALWAYS ON option. !!

clik 'apply' then clik OK.

Exactly. Also, does this happen in Safe Mode?
