This is a stupid argument. Who is to 'blame' is entirely irrelevant at this point, we should be focusing on what the best policy is moving forward. Making policy based on whether or not someone's parents are perceived to have blame several decades back is a child's way of understanding the world.

You need to start with the employers, as that will be more effective than any wall. I wish the federal government would start by penalizing employers. Of course affluent blue staters would lose their collective sh!t if they had to pay fair market prices for their landscapers, housecleaners, produce pickers and hand car washes.

I don't know about you, but I've had a pretty awful time dealing with entitled contractors who end up doing a piss-poor job. I'm usually a pretty calm and collected person, but I nearly lost my cool when I pointed out some mudding compound on the window to the head contractor. Why? Because his response was to start telling me how to take it off! I have literally not dealt with a single contractor yet that I'd be willing to bring back.

I am not talking about Bob the handyman. Sounds like a good opportunity to watch some youtube videos!

The problem is that the argument is a sham. There is a hundred things pushing blue collar wages down and illegal immigration is such a small factor that is hardly matters at all. The Republicans work on breaking unions, killing worker protections, and deregulation of industry has 1000x more effect on lowering wages than immigration, legal or otherwise.

It also occurs to me that the easiest way to stop illegal immigration is to make it easier to immigrate legally. People only immigrate illegally because we have made it so difficult and expensive to do it the right way. But I hear almost nothing from Republicans about that.

Due to the incompetence that I've seen in a few different areas, I've been teaching myself a lot about electrical, construction, etc. Going back to my kitchen renovation, it was a bit amusing when the contractor came in prior to putting up the drywall. I had done the insulation and such, which also included installing a new header to allow me to run a horizontal vent for the stove. I poured a lot of effort into making sure that thing was correct. I read the tables in the IBC that define how your header should be constructed (straight down to the type of wood), and also did research on things like proper plywood orientation (apparently, yes... that is a thing). So, when I told him about it, he seemed to doubt me; however, it only took him a single measurement to see that I did do it all correctly, and there wouldn't be any issues. 😛

In both cases it's fallacious. How many "comfortable middle class" workers and in what fields are they? This isn't migrants it's the economic powers that be. Remember when America was the land of opportunity? You parents? Guess what, that's largely gone and illegals aren't the reason

Here is the US today. These numbers in essence show the odds of breaking out of the class one was born into. Billy Joel decades ago had the measure of this in "Allentown". Today doing as good as your old man did isn't nearly as likely and moving up? That's a bone that everyone ought to know is nothing more than a ploy. Hell, reviews are deliberately manipulated in many cases so those who deserve a raise don't get one, and the people in charge of that get a big bonus for not giving it to others.

But that chart- The lower number the higher your chances of advancement over you parents. We're crappy compared to those commie socialist nations, whose people aren't worn out and tossed for new fodder. We aren't dying because of McDonalds, we're not burning the candle at both ends, we're busting it up into a dozen pieces and burning all the ends. We've peaked on lifespan and are headed the wrong way. It's absolutely insane.

We're all living in Allentown and appeals to baseball, apple pies and sunny days with every Sunday off and having a "comfortable live" one could enjoy listing to the Beach Boys and other fantasies.
