Yeah, the democratic budget balancer. You mean the inflow of tax receipts due to the economic bubble?

So much money coming in even congress couldn't spend it fast enough :)

And Bush had his reasons to expand the government too, everyone has their own stupid reasons. Once you get into power you want the power you have expanded.

We're also doing the "wrong things" once again IMO.
I hope I'm wrong, and you're right and everything turns out well. I really do.

No, it was the TAX INCREASE on the wealthiest that led to that balanced budget.
And restraint in spending (wefare overhaul) that led to the balanced budget.
First thing Republicans do is tax cuts, blowing a big hole in the budget.
Which is worse, taxing and spending, or borrowing and spending?
Clinton actually compromised with the Republicans, and what did it get him? Impeachment.
The failure of Republicans is ideological, they hate the govt but for some strange reason they want to run it.

I'm down for letting it shut down. IMO we should all stop paying taxes until the politicians trying to balance the budget actually sit down and think long term. IT WILL HURT, any sort of "softening the blow" is more likely to be detrimental to recovery than it is going to help it.

Go for it dude! Hope you like Westley Snipes movies! The Republicans made sure there are plenty of prisons for people like you.

Federal revenue was around 16-17% of GDP from 1985 and throughout the 90s until about 98-2000 when it started to increase.
So yeah, it was mostly economy (combined with not spending a ridiculous amount like we do today).

That's cool, hopefully Dems and tea party corner the GOP into shutting down the government. The people need to be given a taste of the small government conservatives are fighting for. Obama should demand that GOP pass his budget, verbatim.
Worked out great for the Repubs in '95. They retained control of the House in the '96 elections and kept the majority for the next 10 years.

You should research what happens in a government shutdown. I've told you what year it occurred, check it out. Few will even notice a difference.

Let's not forget that *every* leading Republican politician and commentator predicted the CRASH of the US economy if Clinton's tiny tax hike on the rich was passed.

It was the best test of the decade in whose economic ideology was right.

Republicans lost, very badly.

It didn't 'work out great for Republicans'. The two leading faces in the battle were Clinton and Gingrich - Clinton won re-election, and Gingrich, well let's read Wikipedia:

In the summer of 1997 several House Republican backbenchers, who saw Gingrich's public image as a liability, attempted to replace him as Speaker. The attempted "coup" began July 9 with a meeting between Republican conference chairman John Boehner of Ohio and Republican leadership chairman Bill Paxon of New York. According to their plan, House Majority Leader Dick Armey, House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, Boehner and Paxon were to present Gingrich with an ultimatum: resign, or be voted out. However, Armey balked at the proposal to make Paxon the new Speaker, and told his chief of staff to warn Gingrich about the coup.[43]

On July 11, Gingrich met with senior Republican leadership to assess the situation. He explained that under no circumstance would he step down...

Resignation
Gingrich's official portrait as SpeakerBy 1998, Gingrich had become a highly visible and polarizing figure in the public's eye, making him a target for Democratic congressional candidates across the nation. His approval rating was 45% in April 1998.[45]

Republicans lost five seats in the House in the 1998 midterm elections—the worst performance in 64 years for a party that didn't hold the presidency. Polls showed that Gingrich and the Republican Party's attempt to remove President Clinton from office was widely unpopular among Americans.[46]

Gingrich suffered much of the blame for the election loss. Facing another rebellion in the Republican caucus, he announced on November 6, 1998 that he would not only stand down as Speaker, but would leave the House as well. He had been handily reelected to an 11th term in that election, but declined to take his seat. Commenting on his departure, Gingrich said, "I'm willing to lead but I'm not willing to preside over people who are cannibals. My only fear would be that if I tried to stay, it would just overshadow whoever my successor is."

Just curious, what third-world shit hole country do you live in?

Why I'm proud to be an American!

I know it's confusing for some and it ain't technically the third world, but we're working hard to catch up. We've got more ghettos, prisons, and secret police then anyone else in the first world and now we're working real hard to accumulate more debt then anyone else! More guns, murders, rapes, torture, and all the usual fun stuff you find going in third world countries.

You should come check us out. You don't even need a visa, just sneak across the boarder and we'll get a job tax free.
