When i had win98 installed about a month ago, :p , everytime i go to start>shutdown>shutdown, the computer will shutdown and the whole system with turn off by itself. Now i have winxp installed, and everytime i shutdown my computer, the black shutdown screen comes on and tells me its safe to turn off the computer, and i have to hold the same computer on/off switch for 5 damn seconds. I am tired to holding the stupid button, i want the system to shutoff like it used to with 98. is there a way to do that in xp?

You have to turn on Advanced power management. Go to control panel, power options, APM tab, then make sure there is a check mark beside "enable advanced..."

That should do it. :)

If you want it to turn off automatically, don't turn it on. Otherwise, keep it on 24/7. :D

the 5 second thing is in your bios... go lookin in there.

sounds like the ACPI HAL is not loaded... I'd really suggest reinstalling with this if your motherboard supports it.

There are ways to get it to turn off with APM, but I'm dont know them off hand.
