Excuse me, but why should it in this case? For a person of religious faith to base that faith exclusively upon an object like the Shroud would be idolatry, an expressly forbidden sin.

By the tenets of Christianity, idolatry is indeed wrong. Tell that to the throngs of people all around the Christian world who flock to see the image of the Virgin Mary (who is not even "divine") in various objects.

IMO, the shroud itself is wholly irrelevant to Christianity, other than being of historical value (in the case that it is not actually a fake).

Well... "Maryism" is a throwback to ancient paganism (with Mary as the Mother Earth figure) and something the Catholic church tolerates only because they can't get rid of it.

And yes, I see the shroud as irrelevant other than as a historical item as well. But even if it is fake (and it likely is), it is documented to be more than 1000 years old so it still has some historical value IMO.
