I had to go to Benezette, PA today to start a survey with my boss. I took the camera hoping I'd get some elk shots. It wasn't much of a hope, really. It was more of a certainty being that we were surveying a tract on Winslow Hill, and that's where the elk herd hangs out.
The first pic is the first bull I saw next to a strip cut. I actually saw him from up in the strip mine and drove down to get pics. Here's a nice shot of that rack getting out of there.
Here's a shot of a herd on the side of the hill just north of where we're working. I counted about 60 elk in that herd through the binoculars. Talk is that there's about 80 in that particular group.
Here's a shot of one of two bulls that were on the baseball field next to the elementary school downtown.
Hope you guys enjoyed the pics, those are some AWESOME beasts :D

Nope, no caribou. PA has some of the nicest elk in the country because they're corn fed and pampered. They have no natural predators and zero stress. They're like elephants at the zoo. People feed them apples out of their hand. It's a wonder no one has gotten killed yet.
The bulls are absolutely huge. You couldn't jump and touch the tops of their antlers. You can't even see over their backs.

There's two herds actually. One in Elk County (stretches into neighboring counties) and in Sproul Stae Forest.

They do the bad thing in the Fall. Right around Thanksgiving the elks get to bugling and the cows get some. They calf in the Spring.
