Hi Guys,

I'm having surgery on my right shoulder (I'm right handed) this Thursday, and I'll likely be in a sling for 6-10 weeks. Since I'm right handed and sloppy with my left, I'm hoping to find some easy to play, story driven games to play.

Ideas? I'm likely going to give the Walking Dead (telltale) games a try. Maybe the Game of Thrones edition as well.

I'm going to need something to pass the time so I'd like something with a good story.

I'll try to ease your pain with a funny, perhaps painful but true story. In the fall of 2010 (mid October) yours truly was up on a ladder cleaning out leaves from a long gutter surrounding our deck (44 ft). I was just about done, at the top of the ladder (9ft up) when the ladder kicked out and I fell shoulder first into the hard deck. I fell so hard I bounced up but knew I was hurt. Was able to stumble into the kitchen, grab the phone with my right hand and lay down to call my wife who was at karate. No answer. I had the front door open for the ambulance ( I knew I was hurt bad) and finally reached my daughter. Off to the hospital where I had a fractured left shoulder (the ball joint was cracked clean through but not displaced) and a fractured scaphoid bone in left hand. They casted my left hand to the elbow with my thumb immobilized and I had to wear a sling on my left shoulder.

I had just pre-ordered the COD that was to come out in November of 2010 and now I was unable to play it for at least 7 weeks. I was devastated.

My wife and I were also scheduled to fly to San Antonio the next week to visit our daughter and son-in-law. Our daughter was expecting our first grandchild and we were going to be there when they had the ultrasound to determine gender. I was determined to be there so to fly, I had to wear a device like a straight jacket to immobilize me. Hurt like the dickens but I wanted to go.

While there, my son-in-law and I went to the Best Buy and he asked if I could manipulate a game controller with my left hand fingers (thumb was useless and immobile). It was very tender but it worked! (He still laughs about that moment)

I ordered one from Newegg and it was there when we came home. I hooked it up to my PC and slowly but surely I started using the four fingers on my left hand to manipulate the controller(hurt at first because of my broken shoulder etc). It was the X box Microsoft version.

I was able to play COD, (not very well but can't do it now) and my spirits lifted. At my age then, 59, the cast had to stay on 7 weeks so you would expect a fair amount of atrophy - muscle loss etc.

The Orthopede cut off my cast and felt my left arm and was amazed at the muscle tone. I hardly had any atrophy! When I told him what I did, he shook his head (he knew I liked video games) and just started laughing.

Good luck. You might want to try the controller for your right hand.

maybe some old school RPGs? Wizardry 8 or something similar. you can sink some good hours into those and at the very least combat will be turn based.

You could also try something turn-based like X-Com 1 or 2, or the old Infinity Engine games. If you have an iPad there are also the touch-based remakes of Baldur's Gate 1 - 2.

I had Shoulder surgery ( three of the 4 roto cuff tendons reattached plus a lot of scraping off the arthritis). I was in a sling for 10 weeks. I played dark souls 2 the whole time (using controller on PC, XB360). It is surprising how well you can move your hand without using your shoulder! The hard part was 6 to 10 hours in the chair (keeps your shoulder moving so it won't freeze) i went all out with PT i did as i was instructed ( Very IMPORTANT ) now it as tho i never had the surgery:thumbsup: edit to add i am right handed and had surgery on right shoulder. As far as story driven games go i enjoyed pillars of eternity. it is turn base. played after recovery

I'd add wasteland 2 to this list. Playing it now and having a good time, story/missions are a little wonky in parts but the combat is good.

If you're into traditional party-based RPGs ala Baldur's Gate, I cannot recommend Pillars of Eternity enough.

its gonna be difficult to play almost anything with 1 arm...

i also wouldn't recommend playing with a controller with one hand in a sling as u will need to move that muscle.

Instead of gaming i would suggest u goto red box or netflix and start catching up to TV series and movies.

Only games i ever played which didn't require both hands and just clicking of the mouse ended up being Clicking Bad and Cookie Clicker.

Cookie clicker is the better of the two, doesn't seem like much of a game but for some people 10 mins in and some people can get addicted to these idle games. It's strange as it gets but who knows it may "Click" for you:)

I would suggest Ancient Domains of Mystery... it's a superb Roguelike that deserves anyones time.

However, you may injure your shoulder more when you throw your keyboard after... a door falls on you, you eat a kobold corpse, linger in the wrong dungeon too long, die saving that @!$%%$'ing NPC... and plenty more

That's pretty cool. I had no gaming outlet when I broke the rotator ball off my left shoulder blade, together with my collar bone, in a motorcycle wreck thirty-odd years ago. They can't cast that and so I spent eight weeks basically living in a chair wrapped in slings. I could take walks, but nothing more active. When the slings came off, my muscle tone was so poor that for weeks afterward that arm would slip out of socket. At first it wasn't that bad, but gradually the muscle tone returned and as it did, slipping out of socket (or more precisely, returning to socket, which after awhile takes force) became progressively more painful. I could have moved my hand, just not lifted it.
