Shoulder clicking

Okay now my problem has turned into shoulder clicking.

When I lift my arm straight out in front of me I get a click right where the top shoulder meets my arm.

One thing is that there is no pain after it clicks.

However, this never used to happen prior to last week.

On top of that, I can hear clicking when doing certain motions with my arm.

When I was taking a shower last night I noticed while washing my body that I could feel this stupid clicking occur.

I went to my GP and he had me do some arm movements and I had perfect ROM with the arm with no pain.

He told me it's a possible pulled muscle and to just rest and go light with the weights.

Will the clicking ever stop? I keep reading about how this is common amongst weight lifters and it's like damnit, I just started!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm planning on getting a second opinion through a sports doctor but would like to get some input on whether anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks again.

This happens to me, too. I get the impression that it happens to lots of people: there was another thread on it a while back. Usually, pain is the indicator of badness. If there's no pain, you should be golden.

i would be careful. i used to have perfectly healthy shoulders (a rarity for someone who has weight lifted for a while), but at some random point, i heard them do a click when i did military press. there was no pain whatsoever, so i ignored it. after a few weeks of this, the clicking started happening more often and from different shoulder motions, not just military press. there was still no pain, however.

finally, the day after a shoulder workout a few weeks later, my shoulder *did* start to hurt. worse yet, it kept hurting to varying degrees after *any* workout that involved the shoulders (e.g. bench press). it would hurt for a couple of days after workouts and made sleeping on my side very unpleasant. even after a couple of weeks off from lifting, it was bad enough that i couldn't do military press at all (not even with half the weight i could do before) and other exercises were still uncomfortable.

my guess is that i did some pretty heavy damage when I kept lifting on it without every letting it heal fully and i think this has weakend my shoulder considerably. i stopped doing *all* shoulder exercises except for (lighter) bench press for about a month. i then slowly integrated incline bench and dumbell raises back into my routine. i also did some shoulder exercises with elastic bands that have helped strengthen the ligaments/tendons. just a few weeks ago i was *finally* able to do military press again. i did very light weight and found that the shoulder didn't pop and didn't hurt, although it was still very sore the next day (not the good kind of sore). i'm slowly working my way back up and it's holding up ok, but it's not a fun experience.

you might have nothing wrong, but to be on the safe side, i would see another doctor, maybe get an xray, and for sure stop doing anything that use the shoulder, as these things have a nasty way of going from bad to worse.

I would do the exact same thing. I wouldn't chance anything, especially when it comes to joints. I have a bad shoulder with pain/lack of flexibility and am rehabbing it using these rehab exercises. If it's the rotator cuff, you should try doing these and see how they help. If you're unsure, definitely go to the doctor.

Well guys I'm going in for an MRI tomorrow night. Wish me luck and pray that it isn't anything major. If I have to miss work I'll be majorly screwed. The good thing is, it doesn't hurt that bad so I may be able to work through it and still continue working. But I've all but given up on working out.

As a medical student studying this, the clicking is the roughening of the cartilage between the bones. If there is no associated pain with it, it just means that you had left that cartilage to sit too long. Nothing to worry about.

However, speaking from experience , I starting doing 30 degree incline presses with DB's and I started to hear a click after I did them. I didn't pay any attention because it didn't hurt. Then on the 5th day(I did these with no break in-between days), I heard a crunch and my shoulder started to hurt. After, that all i heard was clicks in my shoulder after it healed. Too bad I can't pitch like the kid in "The Rookie"

Damn, that's what I am worried about. I would hate to be stuck with clicking for the rest of my life. I mean it's just scary and weird.

Actually, its been 2 months since that happened and the clicking stopped. I can do full rotation without any clicking. Be aware that your body is very resilient if you treat it well with good nutrition and a multi-vitamin everyday.

My shoulders used to do that. So I kept raising em and stretching a lot and it went away one day.
