My fiancee is getting a shuttle bus ride from JFK airport in NYC to Stamford, CT for about $65... is she supposed to give a tip afterwards?

One should tip the van driver a couple bucks, especially if he takes any checked-sized bags from the curb to the van at the airport and from the van to the door upon arrival, and then give at least a buck a bag tip.

And if he doesn't do any of those?

These tip threads always go the same way. Should I tip my barber? No. Should I tip my taxi driver? No. Should I tip my waiter? No. It's like everyone on ATOT watched Reservoir Dogs one too many times and thought, "Hey, that Mr. Pink is on to something!"

If you have to ask, you should tip. Service industry positions pay nothing, and people rely on tips to make ends meet. Most places say 15%, which I personally think is weak, and I always aim for a 20% tip if I'm going to tip at all (unless it was really shitty service). At bars, I'll frequently tip upwards of 25% or more. It's just common decency.

But then again, generosity be damned. If they were meant to make money, they wouldn't be driving your cheap ass around now would they?

Karma is a bitch.

MotionMan,

I tip around 15% for waiters regardless of quality of service, but are there any other occupations which is paid below minimum wage? Gratuity for any other occupation then is just a bonus. I'm not sure why I continue to tip hotel housekeeping and taxi drivers, but I do out of habit.

It is proper tipping etiquette. Their salaries/wages are based on the fact that they will, in theory, receive tips. http://www.findalink.net/tippingetiquette.php

No one says you have to tip anyone. However, proper tipping etiquette outlines who you should tip and how much.

If someone does not want to follow proper tipping etiquette, that's fine, too. Some people just roll that way.

We had a free shuttle from a private parking place near the airport, it was snowing and freezing outside and the driver took our bags from us onto the shuttle, off the shuttle and close enough to the airport doors for us to walk in (and it was around Christmas time)...threw him a $20 spot.

This is why the US should move away from tipping, because no one ever knows WTF to do.

if the driver is taking your bags in/out and opening the door and stuff for you, then yea you should. just give a buck or two.

I think it depends on paying for the service or not a bit too... I think the free service means you should be more likely to give a tip, if the operator lifts a finger to help you. If the service is paid, the expectations are higher. You gotta get your bags handled ;) or at least be entertained by the operator to justify a tip.
