I don't know if there are statistics on this, but I swear I've heard that ejection from the vehicle is the biggest killer in car accidents.

My co-worker lost her cousin to a car accident 6 months ago. Another car had spun out and was stuck in the roadway, but on the other side of a hill, so her cousin didn't see it until the last second, and tried to swerve out of the way. He caught the rear quarter at about 50 MPH. If he was wearing his seatbelt, I doubt he would have even been seriously injured. But he was ejected from the car and killed.

As someone who has worked in law enforcement (military police) and has many friends in law enforcement (military and civilian), they indicate repeatedly that many fatalities from vehicle crashes were directly attributed to a lack of seatbelt wear, especially with ejections.

I'm positive there are plenty of statistics that show seatbelts help way more than they hurt, but too many people believe their "friend of a friend who says..." bullshit stories.

What I hate the most is when I hear people complain "It's uncomfortable". Wow. Call the wambulance, a belt across your lap and infront of your shoulder is uncomfortable! You know what I hear is uncomfortable? Hospital beds.

My buddy fell asleep in his car and veered off into the forest. He nailed 3 trees. His car was broken into 4 different parts. He awoke in the hospital with only a broken toe.

He was very lucky, and I feel that because he was asleep he was able to survive the crash. If he was awake he would have been dead. He had his seatbelt on as well.

If an impending crash is going to happen you just can't go limp. That's foolish. The best that can happen is you will survive because you wore your seatbelt.

I wonder how many people had their seatbealt on during this awful crash. I guess not many because people were thrown out of their cars.

I've always heard you should try and relax if you are about to crash, which is why I always take muscle relaxers before I get in the car.

I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of those complaints come from people who have a body mass index above what is considered to be acceptable.

I've been wearing a seatbelt almost my whole life, minus as a child when we didn't know better and it wasn't legally enforced. Hell, it is automatic for me to buckle in and then my brain almost doesn't even register a seatbelt on me anymore.

You are correct....I'm sure there are a few stories about how someone lived in an accident because they did NOT wear their seatbelt. These are few and far between though...

Overall, when you don't wear your seatbelt a few things happen.

Let's say the airbag deploys. You hit the airbag, and then slide either left, right, or up. Most I've seen, you move left. So that means your head impacts the "A Pillar", either splitting your skull in half or scalping you, depending on what angle your head is when it impacts the steel bar.

Your legs then become jelly as the bones are pushed to their limits and shattered in multiple places.

If you get ejected, hopefully your body gets tossed out like a rag doll before your vehicle, or someone else's vehicle, rolls over your head and pops it like a zit.

The 21-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Camaro who is suspected of DUI and causing a three-car pileup in Diamond Bar on Sunday morning that killed six people has a previous conviction for driving under the influence, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Olivia Carolee Culbreath was just 17 years old when she was convicted in a San Bernardino juvenile court on April 13, 2010, of driving drunk, DMV officials said. She was cited for traffic violations at least two more times before her license was reinstated in December 2011, state records show

Gregorio Mejia-Martinez, 47; Leticia Ibarra, 42; Jessica Jasmine Mejia, 20; and Esther Delgado (whose age was not immediately available) were in the Explorer and were killed. All were members of the same family, authorities said.

they throwing the book at her

A 21-year-old Fontana woman was charged Thursday with multiple counts of murder in connection with a wrong-way driving crash on the 60 Freeway that killed six people.
Olivia Carolee Culbreath was charged with six counts of murder for allegedly driving a red Chevrolet Camaro the wrong direction on the 60 Freeway in Diamond Bar early Sunday morning before smashing into a Ford Explorer, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.
Authorities said they found evidence suggesting Culbreath was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Culbreath was allegedly driving at more than 100 mph. But Sarah Ardalani, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office, said no DUI-related charges had been filed, although that could change.

It sounds like your buddy was the driver, don't you think that if he was awake he wouldn't have crashed in the first place?
