should women be required to register?

The basic idea is that the physical build of men is more suited to fighting than that of women. Furthermore, next time we have a draft we don't want a bunch of parentless kids wandering around because both of their parents got drafted.

No one should be forced to register for selective service at all. It's an antiquated system that kills morale and really isn't needed in modern warfare. If the cause for a war is just, then finding recruits wouldn't be an issue.

You'd think so, but in 2001/2002, nobody was beating down the door to go to war. Military Recruiters saw business as usual. There was no doubt that the Taliban were wrong, and that they were a threat.

Make women go to war. Right on! They do this in Isreal I think. There is no reason why a woman can not kill a person with a weapon just as easily as a man.

The army contains a LOT of support staff even during times of war so being drafted into the army doesn't mean you're automatically going to the battlefield. That's not to say that there aren't women that wouldn't do well on the battlefield though but honestly I think the percentage of women like that is substantially lower then men. I do think that women should sign up for SS.

That is the arguement I always make, also.

There is no reason why women can't be drafted into support rolls, leaving more men to do actual combat. There is no good reason women shouldn't have to register.

^^^

Although if you're going to have a draft, it should be of both genders equally, and no upper age limit, and there should be no exemptions.

I say yes.

Don't put them in battle, there are other positions they can fill in the event of a draft.

I believe its also tied to getting financial aid. don't register don't get any aid.

Surprised no one has challenged that in court. The financial aid part not the only males thing.

Bah, to hell with that. Women are much better suited to some roles, such as combat pilots.
I can think of many jobs where women do just as well as men, if not better.

One problem with drafting women that no one seems to have mentioned.

Since women are not allowed into combat every woman drafted would have to take a non-combat support role.

That means all the non-com positions would end being filled by women, forcing men into combat positions.

Which would also have the effect of lowering the number of people who want to volunteer for the army. A lot of people still join for the GI bill and the money and job security, but if they knew that signing up for all that meant 100% that they would have a gun put in their hand and sent to the front a lot of them would stay away. And since the career volunteer is the backbone of the service we could in the long run end up hurting ourselves.

There are other problems with drafting women as well. The number of women who got pregnant between draft day and induction day would sky rocket.

I would be interested in knowing how Israel deals with these problems.

One solution to this would be to make the draft ?balanced? based on need. 75% male and 25% female or something along those lines.

The army just passed its recruiting goals because once again it lowered the standards to get in. Pretty soon if you can just show up to a meps station you will qualify to enlist.

I personally don't believe in the selective service at all, for men or women. But if you're going to have it then everyone should be in it. Everyone or no one. Service should be optional, always. There are ways to create the feeling of civic necessity without a draft.

i got an example of US army vietnam draft era test taking for ya.

a buddy of mine got wia'd and during his long recovery and rehab, they brass got him a TDY assignment as a clerk in finance or supply i think.

a month into his new job, he was informed that he had to take a typing test because of the new MOS he was in at the time. he never typed a day in his life up to that point and was really worried about getting reassigned out of the unit.

so come test day he goes to the orderly room, gets told to go to a testing room adjacent to the orderly room. a buck sgt meets him at the door and asks him if he's ready to take the test. he tells the sgt. of his predicament and the sgt. tells him not to worry and shows him into the testing room. he asks my friend to point out a typewriter to him, so he does. the sgt. immediately proclaims that my friend just scored a 100% on the typing test and that he was to report back to duty asap.
