You can do a local account. That's what I do. I can still access and download 8.1 in the store, just not their apps unless you need them. Just about everything is like that now requiring you to have an account with them to access services.
Otherwise it's kinda like saying you don't like Valve's direction for pushing Steam accounts for logon.
But for Windows OS itself of course you don't need it, they don't push it, it's just an option and of course they want you to access the store with it being a feature so it's front and center.

Was going to say that the Microsoft account for app management is no different than Valve's Steam. Hell, logging into different Windows 8 computers will allow you access to the apps you got, similar to Steam. Even some of your settings will migrate over and you can access Skydrive in this manner.

First of all, I AM an old fart. My computer is not. It's an i7 with plenty of memory. I ran 8 for a few months and 8.1 for awhile. I still have 8.1 in dual boot. Neither 8 nor 8.1 does a dern thing for me that I needed (with the possible exception of iso support). For me, 7 is snappier and gets 'er done. This is just my opinion, not a forced mandate from God or even Microsoft. Nobody needs to panic. ;)

Wasn't Windows 8.1 originally called Windows Blue? I think that would have attracted more customers, because they would "think" they were getting something new, and in the back of their mind they might have accepted it more for that reason alone. That's sort of what happened with Vista and Windows 7, I think. I'll bet if Windows 7 was called Vista 1.1 many people would have still considered it a failure. In a way, it was nice of Microsoft to not trick people this time, but I don't think it made people who didn't want Windows 8 want to jump on the Windows 8.1 train as much.

Windows 8.1 should have been Windows 8.

I skipped 8 completely and stayed on 7 Ultimate until 8.1 was released.

Nope... it feels more like a buggy beta version of a Windows 8 service pack. There really isn't much in the way of major changes.

That said, I like it better than Windows 8. I'm hopeful that Microsoft will finally get it right in version 9/8.2.

So far do you think 7 or 8 is better

I'm using a 2560x1600 monitor and really like some of the scaling options put into 8.1. It boots faster and has a smaller memory footprint. I also gained a boost in SSD performance. My 8 x 512GB RAID-0 array is about 10% faster in Windows 8.1 than it was in Windows 7. Not that I needed the boost of course.

I'm a huge PC gamer and have an extensive collection of PC games that I'm loading on a fresh install of 8.1. Only about 20% into it, but so far it has been OK. I've only had one game that will not work at all in 8.1, but works in 7 out of the 200 or so that's been installed. The compatibility troubleshooter is hit or miss in 8.1. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Most often I can set my own settings to get things working. That and Windows 8 has been out for a while. I can search though Google to find some troubleshooting tips.

I hated that damn metro in 8.

I'm happy with 8.1. Got everything set up all nice now. It's a great OS

Steam is an application running in Windows. I will happily log into single applications when needed. I don't however want to log into my computer (Personal Computer for that matter) with a Microsoft, Google, Facebook, twitter or whatever account.

Mobile phone is fine. I've made a choice and i can accept that i need an account on the phone to access the store. Same for a tablet. But my PC is much more personal than those devices. So I choose to not sign in with cloud accounts. Microsoft punishes me by stripping me of their services. I'm fine with that.

The store has useless apps and i loose Skydrive. No big deal.

I must admit i like WIndows 8 and 8.1. I just don't like Microsoft's direction pushing Microsoft accounts for Windows logon.

While I agree this is a bit annoying, and at least they should have made the ability to login with a local account more visible.
and it might help if devices that used the MS account where more popular, ie tablets, phones, ala ios devices

But don't forget, Apple has been doing the same with their Apple ID for the last 3 OS releases (started in 10.7 I think) as well as IO7.

As much as we are stuck in our ways (me included) it looks like its part of the change.

I tried to use win8 on my work laptop but some of my software did not work at the time, but for my new home build I put win8 in it right way and have been liking it so far. Might have to give it another go on my laptop, although I did do the upgrade from the store

now the biggest gripe that cannot be forgiven is Office 2013, Who the hell designed that interface, even the light gray and dark gray does not work
