How will this make us safer? Maybe in the same way that standing in a line at the airport and taking your shoes off makes us safer...

Coming back from Thanksgiving, I was behind a very old woman in a wheelchair with obvious back pain. The TSA agents made her get up, walk to the body scanner, and stand up (which she could barely do) with her arms up (which she couldn't do without wincing). Yeah, she's the one who's going to hijack a plane.

Per a retired TSA guy I know, cases like you mentioned are more about did someone hide a weapon on Her that they will recover or did someone hide an explosive
However the primary purpose of that search is certain things trigger a more thorough search. The process is highly automated and by design there is nobody to complain to and nobody gets to decide who gets a pass. System is designed to resist decision making & social engineering

It won't. That's just the excuse they sell the people. Its about control. They more they track you, the more you can be manipulated. These days its virtually impossible to live without breaking some law. In fact its to the benefit of people in power that it is this way. So long as you are compliant, its fine. As soon as you're not your records are pulled and gone over with a fine tooth comb and you end up charged with god know what.

Has there ever been a single government in the history of mankind that could be trusted with that kind of far-reaching, comprehensive information about it citizens? Especially considering the ability of modern information systems to process said info?

I didn't think so.

Should we? Let me ask you: What makes you so sure we aren't doing this right now? There are surveilance cameras, well, not everywhere, but there are a lot. How do you know if facial recognition isn't part of the equation? Who's to stop it and how?

There are two aspects. The cameras have to be high enough resolution. Obviously the Chinese have that. Then there's just the processing of data.

If the Chinese don't like what you're doing they put the screws to you. Not literally, but they do restrict a lot of people from certain activities, including travel. Saw a story or two on this around a year ago.

Are you sure about that part? Lots of info out there about their re-education camps now.

The government ALREADY DOES know more about you than your wife does AND HAS FOR A LONG TIME.

No reason to doubt it, absolutely.

Edit: Can't remember where, but a couple weeks ago or so I encountered a story about a Chinese woman who reported the treatment she'd encountered in re-education camps. Rape is rampant and systematic and that's just the beginning.

Sure...I'm fine with it. We should also be collecting DNA and fingerprints from everyone...including newborn babies...let's also fire up licence plate readers on every cop car and intersection...

Everyone already voluntarily carries a cell phone. Every cell phone comes bundled with a comprehensive suite of sensors and is always connected to the net. "Country-wide facial recognition" would be garbage compared to the data that you can collect from a cell phone.

I hate that it's even come to that, it does not HAVE to be that way, it's just the ecosystem we've been forced into. I was hoping for the Librem phone to do well but apparently it flopped. We really need an open phone platform that is not based on all this spy crap.

Not every. Most times when I carry my cell phone (which isn't always) it's in airplane mode. I'm full stealth... and right behind you.

The issue is it's still fully logging everything you do and once you have a connection it will send it all to Google/Apple.

It's crazy how much they know too. The other day my power went out, so naturally I checked FB just to see if anyone else in my area had an outage. First ad I see is an ad for standby generators. HTF do they know I have a power outage? Are they reading my emails and getting my alerts?

I'd guess they were guessing. They know your location, and likely other people near your location had power issues. They may even track utilities for whatever reason. If you know what to look for, there's a lot of revealing data without explicitly being told.

Sorry to burst your bubble but whenever you switch to airplane mode, we just activate the backup.
