I find it odd that people will tip a dollar to a bartender for popping the cap off a bottle of beer, but a gas jockey guy who stands out in the cold to fill your car up with gas in the middle of winter typically gets nothing. Tip these people here.... but don't tip these people. Strange.

The whole point of tipping is to show your appreciation for the service, and the money goes to the actual person that served you. Fixed amounts or percentage and all that BS needs to go away, and obligatory tipping definitely needs to go away (do you really think that goes to the server? Probably not, it's just part of the meal price). It should be up to the customer to decide how much they tip and when they tip.

No. I like the ability to reward good service and punish shitty service.

Edit: Although... now that I think about it. I work with some people who treat decent waitstaff like shit and don't tip them much of anything, even when they get good service. So I feel kind of bad about that.

Kitchen doesn't get tips so it doesn't matter what you leave the server.

The tip out of bartenders/bussers/hostess, whatver, is probably based on a percentage of sales rather than what the server actually made.

"Don't kill the messenger, but reward the person who delivers the food. As for the person or people who made the food...you didn't have to look them in the eye during the night, so screw 'em."

Why wait to the end of the meal? If I am not getting proper service I ask for a manager. If a restaurant is giving consistently bad service (by not fixing the staff issues) then I stop eating at that restaurant.

I have seen no correlation between my tip and the service at restaurants. Bad wait staff doesn't see a poor tip and think "Oh god I fucked up!". They see it and think "what a fucking asshole!". Most people tip a flat percentage no matter how shitty the service is so the law of averages is going to keep that shitty waiter thinking he's just fine and the fault is with you.
Yeah, pretty much.

Calling his boss over and getting a free meal is a much better way of getting your point across.
...
Though it probably will ensure "poor" service if you're ever there again.

I hate the BS where you are expected to tip if someone delivers appliances or something to your house. Or tipping a maid.

I think they only deserve a tip if you have them bring it up 4 flights of stairs or something. Or a maid if you constantly make a mess and need extra stuff. Then it's fair. But everyone EXPECTS a damn tip anymore. No matter how easy and quick you made it for them.

Tipping is retarded, we tip those people but not others that do the same type of service. It's ridiculous. Herr in Cali they make minimum wage PLUS tips. These people make pretty decent money. And I never understood tipping for crappy service, why reward subpar customer service?

Is the minimum wage in Cali. the same for tipped and not tipped jobs? In many states it's lower for tipped jobs.

This.

Tips shouldn't be part of the salary, they are extras for a job well done. If the person doesn't do well the restaurant should fire them, if they do well the customer can reward them with a bit extra money. The current situation is like putting taxes at 10% or so and saying people have to pay 10-30% more as 'tips' for the government employees.

An extra Euro would be considered a tip for good service over there, it's not like in the US where it covers the majority of a waiter's pay.
yeah I've never seen tips greater than a few euros.
And no one tips at bars or cafés or whatever.

If the service is bad (which would prompt an american not to tip), what you do here is complain to the boss/cook/waiter (usually it's the food or wait time, a waiter just has to bring a plate other it's not like he can fuck up that much) and get a free digestive shot (if you complain at the end) and/or a replacement meal if it's uneatable (in which case you complain immediately).

1) fellatio - 20% tip
2) hand job - 10% tip
3) good service - thumbs up and/or pat on the back
4) bad service - fired

Yah, but apparently your 'ability to reward and punish' actually works against you since 1) The tip size varies very little depending on service 2) It actually works out far in their favor to give shit service and just get more numbers.

Aside from empowering you control issues, it doesn't actually do much.

No the idea is to page a living wage rather than include tips in the bill. Then we only tip for a job well done if at all.

I don't want a mandatory tip. I want tips to no longer be mandatory.

Yeah pretty much this...if the service is bad you don't go back, owner loses business and fires the shitty waiter. It's a concept that works almost everywhere in the world except in the US.
I've been to many countries in Europe and the service had a lot to be desired as there is no incentive to give better service.

I've been to plenty of places in Europe/Australia/New Zealand and the service was good and no need to tip, places with bad service do not survive very long.
