So i can't help but to observe that the bulk of the idiocy in this forum comes in the form of youtube "facts" videos... can we just make a rule that youtube can't be used as form of retort? I think the quality of the discussion would go up quite a bit...

You, sir, are an optimist.

No. I can't see that the bulk comes from Youtube or any other video. The idiocy comes from ill-informed or hopelessly partisan individuals posting. Unless we permabanned about 90% of the posters in this section, we'll continue to have rampant idiocy. That's just fine though, because it more accurately reflects the wide variety of attitudes and opinions of the population at large.

Censorship/Banning of such links would change pretty much nothing.

Yes. Lord yes. If not for the vapid level of discourse that they all entertain, for the convenience. I'll read an article, but for the most part I'm not going to watch a 10 minute video clip.

I cannot remember the last time I have seen someone post a video in response to someone personally. Secondly, if these youtube videos have no credibility and you are superior in knowledge you should have no problem proving it wrong. Third, if you don't like them, don't click on them. Lastly, censorship of clean videos isn't a good sign to members and makes me question the judgment of those who would.

I don't see why the fact that they get posted causes any harm. If you don't want to watch, don't watch, it's that easy. I rarely watch them myself. But I do not support a ban, as that may kill the 10% or so that actually *ARE* interesting/relevant to me.

Thank you, well said and a great level-headed stance from a mod. Kudos!

Poster #1: "In defence of my thesis regarding the Illuminati causing the World Trade Center to collapse, I submit this documentary." (Rickroll warning on video)

Poster #2: "I'm not watching a YouTube video. Give me a decently sourced article or paper, anything but the work of a couple of teenagers equipped with Windows Movie Maker."

Poster #1: "You're so ignorant! You don't want see the truth that's right in front of you! Alan Thicke for President!"

I object highly to the notion that YT videos don't cause harm to discourse. 😛
