Should transfers be faster?

I've got two of my pcs wired up to each other via a Trendnet TEG-S80TXE gigabit switch and cat5e cables. Both PCs are almost identical, both are Abit IP-35e motherboards w/ onboard gigabit NICs in them. One pc has a e7200 and the other is a e2180 cpu, both are using 7200rpm drives. When I transfer among them, the best transfer speed I can get is around 25mb/sec sustained. Is that really the best I can do? Is there a setting I can tweak?

If every thing set correctly you should be able to get about %0MB/sec. functional.

30mb/s is about the best I've ever seen. I'm using a D-Link DIR 655 router and integrated gigabit ethernet.

%0MB/sec?

You mean 50MB/sec? :p

Sorry % is the Shift 5.

Yeah, 50MB/sec.

Please clarify you transfer speeds. 25mb/sec would usualy be taken to mean 25 mega bits per second. You should do better than this on normal 100 mega bit per sec ethernet, or 100 Mbs.

There are already many posts about transfer speeds on gigabit ethernet, 1000 Mbs, also known as 1000BT. Have a read of those, and how you should test your transfer speed, once you have read them post any further questions.

lets make it easy.

i have two maxtor 320gb sata in raid-0

i see about 30% of gigabit peak doing a BESR 8 compressed backup over network (100m) to a AIO storage server (win2k3 storage R2) using smb

machines with one drive seem to have more about 9-12% of gigabit peak usage.

peak is because compression is enabled and potentially could bottleneck based on the cpu scenario.

i have NAGLE disabled on the storage server since it does iscsi as well. no flow control. no jumbo packets.
